1200 DVT Keyless Fuel Cap Power

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Steviegtr, Oct 15, 2017.

  1. Does anyone know how the keyless fuel cap gets its power. Does it have a battery or is it wired to the bike. If powered by the bike then anyone know how & where it connects. I have been offered one at a good price taken off a guys bike that he has now sold. Also if powered by bike is it a visit to dealers to have switched on. Any help appreciated. Bike is 2017 1200s

  2. No idea where the power is but all previous model ones had to be switched on at the dealer.

  3. The power lead is at the top LHS near the keyless start button under the cover - right by the Sat Nav take off.

You may need to take off the black Cover on LHS to gain access after pulling up the keyless start button cover.

5 minutes to get to connector - probably also need to disassemble the plastic tank cover to change it?? thats a bit longer.. not sure if it needs activation..

  4. The power is from a black lead down the left side of the tank cover.

I took the cover off when fitting mine, I’ve read you can do it without taking it off but I couldn’t see how.

  5. You never said if it needs activating at dealers.
Looked at the instructions above. Wonder why the tank has to come off. Looks like too much work, probably won,t bother buying it. He was asking £120 not sure if thats cheap or not.

  6. If you're not bothered and he can post I'd be interested Stevie?

  7. Can't remember the price of mine, (easy to find out the price of a new one though). But I can't see the point of having keyless ignition but then need to fish out a key to open the fuel cap ?

  8. £ 120 is cheap. In Ducati dealer it seems to be £227 (https://www.ducatiglasgow.co.uk/buy/DUCATI-Hands-Free-Tank-Filler-Plug/96680491A). I am personally little afraid of putting more this type of things (I already had one problem with keyless ignition). What happens if there is a problem with the connection or something. You cannot open the tank as there seems to be no manual alternative or am I wrong?

  9. Mine refused to open when we stopped to refuel on the motorway in Germany.

At first we all thought it was just having a Ducati moment !!

After 10 minutes still no joy, had to call Ducati recovery who took bike to the not so local Ducati dealer, who somehow broke it open.

It was replaced under warranty last last August, so far its worked every time.

    Fingers crossed

  10. In my opinion, it’s should still work off the key too as a backup.

  11. I always carry a suitable allan key, but must admit I haven't attempted to open the cap with it yet ?

  12. Mine has been faultless, since fitted, 2010 MY

Watch it go and bloody fail now I've said that!! :scream:

  13. I have an electronic fuel filler cap which I bought in 2011 and have transferred to each new bike since. So it has now done nearly 60K miles on three bikes, and is still working just fine. This is not to say there might not be a risk of one failing, like any other component - just that my one has not failed so far.

At one time I carefully studied a manual cap against an electronic cap to see if it would be possible to combine parts from both, and create a cap which could be opened either automatically or by key in the alternative. Sadly no, that would be very difficult to do because the caps are differently designed (although they look superficially similar).

  14. After reading all the above i don,t think i will bother with it. I don,t know who is selling it as its a friend of a friend. Thanks for all the advice anyway.

  15. That's a pity, but I understand as it could be a duff one. But like Pete I've transferred mine and not had any problems with it and it is an asset.

  16. When you transfer it to another bike do you have to get it coded to bike. Or does it just work.

  17. I've always had the dealer do it when I changed the bike Steveie, but easy enough to find out just give them a ring.

  18. It just works, I have found.
