1200 Keyless Start - Key Range

  1. My nice new (to me) 2012 Multistrada will be arriving soon and it has the keyless start. I normally keep my keys in a key safe inside the house but that is bolted to the wall about 1m (and two brick thicknesses) from where the bike will be.
I was just wondering security wise whether it would be safe to leave the key in the safe or do I need it further away or have some some of ‘isolation pouch’?
What range does the key generally have? Assuming full battery, max possible range.

  2. IMO, with a new battery, up to 2metres max.
To ensure better protection I would suggest a faraday pouch of some kind.
Having had a 66 plate Jaguar XFS broken into by some scum in 2018, as I parked my car at a motorway service station, even though I had my keys, I've always ensured such a protection device.

    Your choice though! ;)

  3. I always work on the principle of bolting the gate way before the horse even thinks of bolting, hence the question. The pouches aren’t expensive so it seems a sensible investment. It’s probably overkill as there are already ground anchors, multiple locks, the loudest alarm I have heard, plus a shed load of other things. Many years ago someone nearly nicked my KR1S and it was only saved by an Abus lock and chain. A lesson well learned……..

  4. I think the range might be a little further. I realised I could start the bike when the key was in my bike trousers in a cupboard above the garage. I guess it was almost directly above the bike so maybe 2m is right?

I bought a Faraday pouch and it’s fine now.

  5. A tinfoil hat is effective as a Faraday Cage. Beloved of conspiracy theorists everywhere.

  6. You can try it when you get the bike and know for definite.
