Kriega Tank Adaptor On Hm821: Fitted/photos

  1. Hello Dave(s)

I just bought a tank adaptor from Kriega to try and get some more luggage on the HM821, I already have a Kriega(US 20) that fits very nicely on the rear of the bike, but will probably be doing the Christmas rounds and racking up some miles over the next couple of weeks and need some more room for all the Christmas socks I'll probably be receiving...

My current US20 is cracking, fully waterproof...tested this many times...stable on the back and easy to attach/detach, so thought I'd try and fit another one....

Well... its a tad too long for the very short tank on the HM, i got it fitted but its not ideal...pics below.

a bit short, i had to pull it as far forward as i could without obstructing the ignition

Front straps tied to the frame tubes, but the lowest ones i could reach to leave a reasonable length on the tightening end of the strap..bit of a fiddle doing this, might be better to remove the plastics, quite a lot of wires to try and avoid too.

The reason for having it so far forward is because the rear fasteners foul the seat, if you position it so the fasteners locate under the seat, then the seat won't locate/fit. Picture above shows the clearance even with the adaptor pulled way forward.

plenty of space though for the velco stickies. with the adaptor straps pulled tight at the front, i adjusted the position of the rear fasteners so the seat would locate and left the loose strap ends under the seat. This means that any tension required to stabilise the system needs to be applied from the front.

US20 bag fits ok though, its not stuffed full here, but it doesn't interfere with the steering lock, handlebar clamps do touch the bag, but not in any way that will upset the steering. The whole system seems secure and when you are riding the bike you really don't notice it, clocks are still visible, well as much as they ever were on the HM, still have to nod my head to look at the dash.

the Kriega installation video shows the rear fasteners being released to gain access to the fuel filler, thats not going to work here because the rear fasteners are difficult to reach and even if you do managed to pop them open, the bag is so close to the handlebars, you can't hinge it up. Front fasteners, whilst still a bit awkward, are easier to reach, pop open, the bag then hinges from the rear.

When reconnecting the front fasteners, it is necessary to re-apply a bit of tension to the straps.

Overall...its probably not ideal, but its a stable system and i've 20l more luggage space on the bike with out resorting to bungies and leaky Aldi carriers bags...

  2. Cheers for sharing, I was thinking of getting one of these but think i'll give it a miss as its not a cheap bit of kit to not be perfect, will stick with my R30 rucksack or R3 bumbag for now!

  3. True, its not perfect...about to do 1000+ miles in the next week or so visiting the relatives, weather looks like its going to be crap, so, will update with how practical it is in use...

I can thoroughly recommend the US20 on its own though, if you were looking carry more gear, it fits well on the back of the HM...

not keen on rucksacks on the bike, do you find the R30 easy to get on with?

  4. I love the r30, it does seem like I'm not wearing it when it's on, plus as with the US packs it's fully waterproof. Let us know how you get on with it on the trip.
