Later Brembo Wheels On A Carby Ss

  1. Hi all

I have a set of the later three-spoke Brembo wheels in black from a Sport Classic

Can these be made to fit my 900ss?

I think the rim sizes are compatible, the rear being a 5.5 but the existing bearings are for a wider axle, so will obviously need replacing. I'm just not sure about the rest in terms of axles and front speedo attachment etc. Just not sure whether they might sit slightly offset etc?

Anyone else tried to fit such wheels on an SS ?

  2. I fitted a set of ST2 wheels into a 900SS Carbie.
(Because they were a lot lighter)

I assume they are similar if not the same as the SC wheels.

    From Memory:
    Back wheel
Changed the bearings for ones with the correct combination of ID/OD to use the original Spindle.
But had to reduce the width of the sprocket carrier assembly/spacers etc in my Lathe to reduce the overall width enough to fit in the SS swingarm.
I can't remember if I started with the ST or SS Sprocket carrier.
I think, but can't be sure I also had to skim a bit off the rear Brake Caliper bracket as well.

    Front wheel
Changed the bearings for ones with the correct combination of ID/OD to use the original Spindle.
But also the only bearings available in the correct ID/OD were wider than the originals so I made the pockets deeper in the hubs using my Milling machine and also had to fabricate a shorter bearing spacer tube for inside the hub.
I also had to skim the speedo drive down a lot thinner so the wheel was centred, and in truth it was almost falling apart after.
I think I used the SS speedo drive lug thing as well.

As you can see the main issue was overall width of both ends.

I wanted to find a way to do it, and could obviously do the machining myself, but I'm not sure it was worth it.

  3. AFAIK, there were 2 rear axle sizes: 17mm and 25mm and the wheels are essentially the same fit, you just need to change the bearings and the central spacer to suit the axle size.

  4. Have just realised I do still have the pair of wheels I modified, including the sprocket carrier, but not the speedo drive.
So if you need more images or measurements let me know.

You can even see in the second image where I skimmed a bit off the outside of the carrier, but most of the work was on the other side of the carrier and the internal spacer.

  5. Sorry, one last comment.
You could probably do the front wheel without the hub machining if you scrapped the mechanical speedo drive and went electronic.
That would gain you a lot of space on the near side and the wider bearings could be used.

  6. Thanks all for the quick and detailed responses.
Once again, the breadth of knowledge on this forum is staggering.

  7. If you do a search there's previous on the SS wheels. I'm not entirely sure about the ones you have, but I certainly looked into it a few years back. I plumped for Oz wheels, they are for the ie, but with a replacement front axle and speedo drive, it all fits great.
