So I have an old Guzzi, it's giving me a short somewhere, I just found realized about an hour ago and have yet to troubleshoot fully as its been off the road awaiting some fairing repairs. As I fitted a new ignition switch in the interim, the old one was toast and being a firm believer of "If summit feks up check your last bit of bodging" I'm wondering if the ignition switch is said culprit. I'll be doing some checks tomorrow. So if you have not fallen asleep here's the problem, the original switch is no longer available, the 2 alternates are shit & very shit aftermarket cheapie switches. So I'm thinking a straight ignition switch from a Marine supplier is a possibility, but they will not have a park position on them, which leaves the ignition off and the sidelights on. Your chances of getting pulled or done for that have gotta be next to nil, BUT is it checked at an MOT, I cannot recall my tester ever checking it, but just thought I'd ask what others have experienced John
Parking lights are not a requirement for the mot but you must have front and rear position lights ( pilot light and tail light).
Thanks @Derek I have park and tail for sure just unable to use a "Park" position if I get this switch. I'll dig into it tomorrow to see if I can find out what the hell is going on Thanks John
With lights / mirrors / indicators etc ... If it's fitted it must work and be serviceable for an MOT.
Hi Al (@Arquebus ) Well not strictly a Guzzi in the true sense but to all intensive purposes a LM 1000 (aka LM V). It's the Magni Sfida 1000, which uses LM 1000 running gear, I think the ignitoin switch is pretty standard in nearly all the Tonti series
'Like' isn't enough for that Guzzi Jock. Thats fabulous. I'm dead envious its so pretty. Please leave it to me in your will. I will caress it 24/7.
pretty sure you can buy the 3 position switch your after from any motor factor. not expensive, much cheepness. our local shop sells them. you could even wire it so it works the starter instead of using a button.
Now we are going to go "Off Topic" and I'll never get a satisfactory answer.........................Boots when I go, I'd love the Sfida to go to a good home it's more important than what's it worth. It looks better than it goes though and it weighs a bloody ton..........................it's still a hoot to ride though, great machine for an old codger like wot I am (except a walking pace, I fall over at walking pace regularly, that's why the looks are imperative, I get the bystanders to help me right the Ffffff'n thing) Fin if it is the switch, I'll get it out (Fnarr Fnarr) and measure it up, to see if you could assist. I like the idea of having the ignition switch to turn and start it, but that's not going to happen after all the grief rewiring it.............................although....................I could possibly double it up with the start button, without too much grief, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!
deffo, think it would be pretty cool using the ignition switch actually. tho it would pose a problem with the compulsory bliping of the throttle during start up. i will try and mind to phone B+H the morra for a price.

Top one Al (@Arquebus ) is the Zadi I have in it. It's Ok, but if it's the switch and not my sausage fingers that causing the issue I'd like summit else. The second does look like an original, bit tatty Third one, no clue but a possibility............thanks Fourth one off a spiney (beam frame) bike like the Daytona or Sport 1100, completely different mount, in fact closer to a 1098 type switch than a Tonti. As for the weight...............I think the frame is heavier gauge than a standard Toni, its got a far larger tank so when it's filled with fuel that doesn't help, it's got double swinging arms and just one of these skinny little wheels weighs more than both of the 1098 wheels put together...................I have no idea how it can turn like it does, because it handles pretty respectfully, guess the skinny profile helps. Thanks all the same appreciated, now to go out shed & start looking John
Well, the frame may well be a different one, having had a closer look, because the OEM bottom rails bolted to the down tubes near the front IIRC and the prop stand was near the front too. The centrestand looks like a cut about OEM one and I assume the tank is more than 5 and a bit gallons. I can see the mods at the rear of the frame for the parallel swingarm though - is the shaft drive still there - that bevel box weighed a ton. The wheels don't look as heavy as the original Le Mans ones, though.
Ok may have found the problem Badly crimped connection on the ignition switch, not outta the wood yet but it the connector is a smoking gun for sure. I remember now I had to remake them Until I put on a new one and retest the whole thing I won't be 100%
Jock, really nice, beautiful; you don't have to will that bike!! I got a home for it next to Steve's bike get somebody to ring me if I dont go first? Old Pete
Hi Al (@Arquebus ) The frame although mirroring the Tonti design is quite bit different, a lot of the tube section is wider & I believe and heavier gauge, there is more bracing around the headstock too The centerstand is Magni's, although he may well have used the original design and modified it. Think the tank is around the 5 gallon mark, never actually measured it, because he used the original Guzzi petcocks the bike does about 150 miles on normal and probably more than that on reserve, it's ridiculous, but that's the way it is. I could modify it but it's low on To Do list. It's hard to believe how heavy these dammed wheels are, they don't look it, but I could not believe the weight in them, they are Aluminuim, I wish no I'd got the Magnesium versions but the cost of the Aluminuim versions were prohibitive enough. They are EPM,Elaborazioni Preparazioni Magni and replaced the original spoked versions. Shaft drive and bevel box still there and still as heavy, the shaft again is a Magni creation,it's different from a Lemon, in it has 2 UJs to allow for the extra movement in the arm and again is propriety Magni design. He apparently came up with the parallelogram idea when he was race engineer for MV and toyed with the idea of introducing it as modification for the MV road bikes, patented a lot of the ideas and finally with the MVs introduced a chain drive conversion When MV went bust after a short dalliance with BMW he started making the frames for Guzzis and did pretty well out of it. You can rad more about him here http://www.magni.it/storia2.htm Fuck went Off Topic on my own bloody thread Fault was the bad crimp, but the switch is still pretty shitty, if @finm comes up with anything I'm still up for replacing the dammed thing Now to sort the fuse that keeps blowing John
I got from Ardleigh just North of Colchester to St Austell starting with a full tank and not running onto reserve with my Le Mans II - 350 miles approx. I can't recall how far between stops when I went to the Guzzi factory, but it wasn't many. if you like, send me the switch and I'll repair it........I have had to do three or four ignition switches.
Much appreciated Al, that's a generous offer It's not an absolute screaming urgent, I'll fish around for alternatives once I've sorted the blowing fuse and got the screen back onto the fairing after the repairs I'll post up some pictures in the Other Bikes section later. The repaired fairing is now minus the Magni logos in the picture above but I could get the decals off Magni should I feel the need Thanks Again John
The parallelogram was a Scottish thing Jock. James Watt came up with the idea to ensure the connecting rod remained parallel during cycles of his steam engine. So you see, us Scotsman are the greatest. Of course you already know this, but its always nice to let the heathen English know just how great we are. Now thats how you go off topic.
