748 Leaking Injector When Standing ?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Slingy123, Jan 21, 2022.

  1. Question oh learned ones,

my 748 has been standing for a month at a friends house due to lack of space. Today we went out and on starting the bike it initially ran on one cylinder before the other kicked in and belched out black smoke and stank of being rich. It would seem the rear cylinder injector is letting by when standing for prolonged periods as it’s done similar but not as extreme before.

I have had two occasions where fuel hoses have burst in tank and caused breakdowns due to running mega lean and cutting out. So either excessively worn injector or letting by when standing.

Are these a straight forward swap without any issues ? I saw a new one listed on eBay but it’s say it’s for 748/888/996 etc, is the injector the same across the range or any pointers where to find the correct ones please

    thank you muchly :D

  2. They are quite straight forward to change but can be a bit of a bastard getting out. They just sit in a recess with a O-ring and it gets dry and doesn't want to budge. I'd try and clean the one you have first. A easy way is to power it up with a 9 volt battery and spray it through with brake cleaner or similar. A soft paint brush of tooth brush helps to shift any unwanted deposit.

  3. Fairly easy to exchange.
    I've done it several times.
When you have the throttle bodies off you can use a perfectly sized socket as a drift/punch out the injector from underneath after using lots of WD40 or similar

  4. I have used a professional injector cleaner via ebay before. They test the injector, clean it and then put a new o ring on. Quite decently priced and possibly cheaper than replacing one.

  5. Thanks guys,

Does the 748 share it’s injector with other models ?

  6. I believe it's quite a generic injector and has been used on some cars. It's certainly the same as a 748SPS and I use also these injectors in my 748R engined 748S which uses the basic airbox and injector system of the earlier 748's due to frame differentials. It works fine and when set up at CJS was only 1/2 bhp down on a 748R fitted with the big 54mm throttle bodies.

  7. Yes , I've got a hunch that you're right .

I looked for info on which makes / models used a particular injector ..... and it's fairly sketchy ,
but this injector comes up again and again ( so it's possibly generic , as you say )

Weber / Magneti Marelli PICO fuel injector - IWP189
    510cc/min

I don't have my manuals here so I can't do any more checking .
My 20 year old bike was stood up in a hot dry climate for 3 or 4 years , and the inside of the tank was a shocking nightmare .
The fuel lines had turned to jelly and ruined the pump and filter , so it made me think seriously about the injectors ..... as you would .

Somebody suggested I try these people ..... looks like £25 per injector plus postage :-

  8. yes it does, IW 031 is Weber designation. Professional cleaning/attention best of course particularly if faulty but a prolonged soak with Carb cleaner used to suffice if engine low-mileage but had stood for a bit. You could take a punt at secondhand as they turn up still fitted to throttle bodies at a reasonable price sometimes.

  9. I bought a set of used injectors for my 916 wake-up project from Gotham and they are brilliant. I had them flow tested first and they had no issues. My bike which had not been fired in decades runs just as it should.

In fact everything I’ve gotten from Gotham over the years has been just as advertised. Lightning fast shipping at least here in the US.

  10. Thanks Gents,

looks like I’ll be pulling the injectors and sending them off for testing. Bike runs spot on, turns over for around 5 seconds before firing up, but runs well when fired up. Then there is the running on one cylinder and black smoke out rear cylinder exhaust if left standing for weeks in end.

m Will get the injectors out in the next few weeks. Need to sell some bikes first as garage is ramp packed now so can’t work on anything in there :worried:

  11. It's well worth looking at other vehicles to search for shared parts across the motor industry ....
.... it can save a stack of money .

Cross-reference tables like this one can be really handy -
    http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm

Just about everything in the Ducati ignition / injection system is made by Weber / Magneti-Marelli
or BMW , and it's cheaper to buy them as BMW parts rather than Ducati parts !

As an example : There's a unit on Ferrari gearboxes which converts the driver's paddle shifts
into mechanical actions ...... and they break .
They cost around £1500 from Ferrari , and a few hundred as a Lancia part .....

  12. I am wondering if Ducati used that same injector across a large range of models ?

The main variations in the auto industry seem to be (a) flow rate and (b) low or high impedance ,
for each type of injector .

If anyone reading this has any injector handy , and can give the type number , I'd be most grateful .
    .... Thanks !

    :upyeah:

  13. did you look at the link on that post oldtech? WEBER IW 031 is the Weber designation on the body for 748/996 etc as per link... ??

A good trawl on the Internet will give you most of the injector data and cross referencing, there is even quite a lot on this forum. 8v Lancia integrale use IW 025 but I’ve fitted 031 injectors before as so little difference.

  15. @Chris .... thanks :upyeah:

Sorry ...... I'd skipped past the Gotham site ....... and $90 seems a fair price for a used injector ,
    [ it's around €280 from Ducati parts vendors , as part # 28040051A ]

  16. there is so much advancement in injection since the crude Lucas set-ups of the 60's and you could spend a week absorbing it all but a lot of it redundant on most of "ours" and more concerned with later bikes but even on basic 748 and "S" I believe you could use a slightly different injector that could show benefits if fuel mapping could be changed at the same time. (Controversial alert!) - it could be argued that the basic 996 and "S" were compromised right from the start as only with all conditions in tip-top order could you justify having twin injectors opening simultaneously without running into fueling problems on a standard tune engine. I can only guess it was a cost-cutting reason for them not specifying the sequential version as fitted to SPS etc.

  17. when searching yesterday I wasn't surprised to see that Chinese copies are available now.

  18. Thanks again for the discussion guys. It’s given me plenty to go on and more info is better. I did see you could get Chinese injectors for cheap, won’t be going down that route, same with secondhand ones which could be as bad as mine. Best option for now is send off for testing/cleaning and explain I’m particularly interested in possible dribbling when standing as well as flow rates under pressure. I’m sure a decent service will revive mine back to good as new :upyeah:
