999 Leaning Over To Much On Stand

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by martinO, Mar 30, 2016.

  1. Side stand question anyone else got a 999 that looks like it's about to fall over when it's on the side stand. Or has anyone tried a billet one from slipstream racing (or a UK supplier as they are in the states)
    Cheers

  2. Hi Martin,

Some differing options here. I went with a new stand, fitted at main dealers for £150.

A mate took his apart, cleaned and put everything back together with good results.

Another option is an 848 stand, I have seen it referred to elsewhere on here so you could try searching. From memory it didn't require any other mods.

Not heard/seen of the billet one, but my problem was that the stand is aluminium and wore away where it rubbed against the steel mounting plate, meaning the stand was allowed to go past the 'stop' on the steel plate and went too far forward. The billet one sounds like a stronger material less prone to wear and therefore straighter...

    Others may know better!

  3. Cheers mate will look into those, interested to know if any other solutions are out there.

  4. Beware letting the deckhands strap down you bike on ferries, they mostly let you DIY these days but beware that they may give it a tweak once you've left the car deck. Alloy side stands can easily be bent.

  5. Your right about beware the ferry mate went on one last year and because it was leaning too far a caravan knocked the mirror assay off. Very helpful staff helped with a temporary fix then the ferry company paid for all the repairs. The two driving was ushered away

  6. Mine did the same, had to get it welded in order to not fall over.

  7. Try to catch the problem early so that the existing bracket can be mended/adapted.

Or you could do what I did, wait too long and have to buy a new bracket (several million quid, IIRC).

  8. 1st I would double check that both of the mounting bolts are tight and the threads are not stripped in the engine casing, this can be easily repaired with a helical thread repair kit on EBay for £10
With mine I drilled and tapped a Allen head screw to stop the stand going past the 90 degree point, worked perfectly and cost nada.

  9. They wear down at the top so this makes them lean over more. Protwins wielded a new bit back on the top so the profile is like the original and mine no longer leans as much. I have seen them with a thicker foot piece wielded on the bottom but this looks a bit clunky.

  10. I Araldited a 1/2 inch thick nylon disc to the bottom of my stand ,purely as a short term fix until I could think of something else...that was last summer!
To be fair its done the job up to now, reducing the stress on the stand by providing a shallower lean angle....its a shite design IMO.

  11. Just araldite and it's still there??

  12. have you double-checked the rear ride height adjuster is not past it's max limits to get the geometry you wanted,
you can keep the same geometry by moving the forks up into the yokes further then reducing the rear height again, I adjusted the rear ride height only myself once to get the ride feel I wanted but had your problem so I read a real good site and it said drop front yokes first, one was called Avanti I can't remember the other one

  13. Yes ,unbelievably its still there,i keep meaning to do something more permanent with it but never seem to get round to it,i do keep an eye on it and it feels solid as a rock!...I had a fluttery moment when the MOT tester pivoted the bike on it earlier in the year but I needn't have worried.:flushed:

I've seen an aluminium specifically shaped block with a chamfered hole drilled in it, you just need to drill and tap a hole in the base of the stand... on some website ,just cant remember which one, seems like a good mod.

  16. Yes, very. At OYB today I parked on my own behind the DJ booth in case it fell as didn't want it to land on another bike! When I walked back to her 2 blokes were checking her out, thought they had picked her up for me! Turns out, she just draws a crowd.

996 was bad before putting a 1098 stand on, guess that's on the to-do list then.

  19. Reminds me of Garry Glitter. That alone would stop me fitting it.

  20. I didn't fit it but mine has a very similar thing with a block of shaped black plastic glued to the bottom of the stand, works a treat.
