Lightweight Flywheel- Thoughts Please

  1. I think @cookster might have had one fitted?

  2. When i bought my 999S it had a lightweight flywheel fitted, agreed it is quite a big weight saving and it spun the motor up quickly but for a bike that was primarily ridden on the road it had a tendency to stall whenever i stopped at junctions /lights and i got so pissed off with it that i re-fitted a standard flywheel .

  3. I would suggest if you were using your bike on the track, either racing or just track days & you are fast then you would undoubtly feel the benefit. Otherwise I would save my money for all the reasons yellowducmaniac says.

  4. My old 853 sps track bike the fly wheel was removed completely and the motor spun up very Well, never road it on the road but @duke63 bought my engine and put in his road bike he might be able to shed some light on it.

  5. I have the full race lightweight flywheel in my 853, ticks over really well at about 2300rpm. IMO, not a mod for a road bike. Andy

  6. Thanks all for your input. What your all saying is exactly what I’m thinking. I think the twins needs a heavier flywheel to carry the inertia of a lumpy tickover and low revs. Facts are they are not the best thing in slow traffic to start with. Cheers

  7. Mine works fine.

  8. Mine (853) has no flywheel, engine set up by CJS, 7 years ago and still ticks over fine at 1500. Spins up and down super quick. I much prefer it, road and track.

  9. At the recommendation of Nelly, i put a lightweight flywheel in the engine as it had a tendency to stall far too easily.

Its much better but will still occasionally stall if i slow down quickly at a junction. This engine has a high compression tho and its basic physics that this requires a certain amount of inertia at low revs.

TBH on a road bike i would not remove/reduce the flywheel as the benefits are outweighed by the negatives.
