Link pipes

  1. Are the exhaust link pipes the same on the carby and the ie??

  2. They are slightly different as the headers were altered on the IE to give it better ground clearance. The difference isn't massive though so fitting shouldn't be too problematic ; )
I had SL cans on my IE, just had to make up some new hanging brackets.

    Ian.

  3. Couldn't fit early big-bore headers on my ie due to swingarm differences.

  4. If you look at any of the photos of mine, they might help.....

....mine are 750SS IE link pipes and cans (Laser) and they fit quite well now that I have them sorted because they are fixed link pipes/cans which meant a lot of fiddling about to get the angles etc right, as I had to make new hangers up.

If you are using non-fixed links and the round clamp strap hangers, you will find it fairly easy IMO........the main things to watch when setting them up is the proximity to the swingarm and the brake lever cylinder rod lug.........it's close. You can see it in my photos.

  5. Thanks for that gents, got some scorpion cans on the way to replace my standard cans, but they are from an IE thought I was going to have to get another set of link pipes, good news for me then. Just waiting for them to arrive now, I hate waiting. Single seat and tiny fairings next??

  6. Not sure which diameter (can end) link pipes you will need............the IE ones fit my headers OK........

Is the can hanger a fixed position one or do they use a strap?

    AL

  7. Just arrived, they are strap on's Al, the link pipes are separate to the cans, will see if I can get one on later. Photos to follow.

  8. If they are strap hangers, then you should have no issues at all........assuming all the pipes are the correct diameter etc....

However, when you finally assemble them in place, get some clear silicon gasket stuff and squirty squirty it down the header sockets.......then tighten up and leave it a day before you do anything else.........

........if you don't I reckon you might have wibbly wobbly zorsts if the sockets are loose.....

  9. Thanks Al, fitted one and to say wobbly is right. Next stupid question, are there different length if link pipes, the hanging braket is right at the end of the can?

  10. Depends which cans and link pipes you have got.....can you post a pic?

Also try pushing the straps back / 'at a rake' and turn the link pipes inward and see if they fit better at a higher level...I have minimal clearance to my swingarm.

And are there any bolt / mounting holes in the cans?

  11. Thanks Al, photos at the weekend. There's about 10mm between the can and the swing are as it stands, the exhaust could be bent as I think the bike has been down the road on both sides.

  12. My cans miss the swingarm by about the same at the lower end of the can....

I have a method to adjust that sort of thing if you can get the bike here.....or you wait until the weather is better and I get to you.

  13. On a similar note: I need some link pipes making up in different lengths to try on the dyno, the fit is not important or is looks at the mo, does anyone know of anywhere to go for such an item? these have to be in 2" stainless 1mm gauge if poss with mandrel bends. please pm the details.
I will keep my fingers crossed.

  14. PM duc904red

He might be able to supply what you need....

  15. Also try MADASL on here as well, he makes all sorts of exhaust systems, for sale by him and other businesses.

  16. Dave, thanks for that. i got the front pipes from MADASL but at the mo he has no link pipes, so hence the post. i am also looking for different shapes and differing lengths to try on the dyno.
Duc904red has contacted me and i think i am on the road to getting some simple pipes made up just for testing, this will give me an idea for optimum length, i really want to go as short as possible.

  17. if you wont them just for the dyno just use a stright lengths and keep cutting a 1" off after each run until you find optimum length, diffrent shape wont make a diffrence, get sume bungees for the cans lol.

  18. On and fitted, tried to put pics on, but I'm blessed with windows 8.1 on my laptop and it won't let me(come back XP all is forgiven). Will put them on tomorrow at work. Sounds alot better, lost the tinny sound and seems better running too. Next job is valve clearances, think I'll let the experts lose with the one. Oh and finish new slave cylinder project.

  19. pull your finger out man get them pics on,im still waiting for a clutch center from the states.

  20. My apologize, did a bit more work on it today, manged to drill a hole wrong, 1mm out, doh!!
