Is there a decent one that fits in without too much trouble in terms of padding or cable modding etc?
Rich, I used a Ballistic evo 8 cell on mine. Superb, tiny and if you uprate the starter cable shoelace to a proper lead it'll turn over like you'd just had your piston rings nicked! I used the foam which the battery came in to take up the gap in the battery tray.

Great price from Casque. Maybe I'd have gone for one if I'd seen that first... Slightly worrying that when you choose Ducati in the application finder, it stalls and allows you to go no further. Now, what does that remind me of?? Certainly not a Ducati of course...
Try googling it. I think you'll find that like the Motobatt, it's a Marmite battery with some loving it and some hating it. Tis a good price for lithium technology though...
Don't bother.....it isn't worth it.......... I'm still using a cheapo Yuasa copy lead acid battery that must be at least 7 years old...charged twice and topped up twice in five years..may need charging this winter owing to lack of use.......and I suspect it has been slowly getting worse for 4 four years.......but I bet it still starts the bike fairly easily...
Arquebus, I just transplanted an evo 1100, partly to lose 6kg on the bike. I am OK spending an extra hundred quid to lose 3 more on a battery.
They have a note on charging in their tech section, as long as it doesn't do into a discharge cycle you should be ok. Ballistic Performance Components Charging: The best method for charging your EVO battery is to use the Ballistic Advanced Charger. You can also use a conventional automotive or motorcycle based charger to recharge or maintain your EVO Battery. When using a conventional charger or trickle charge please check the following: The charger should have an automatic cut-off at 14.4V to prevent over charging. If you are using an automatic charger, be sure it does not have an automatic “desulfication” mode. This is a lead- acid specific function that can damage the EVO cells. Some conventional automatic chargers have charging parameters based around lead-acid voltage specifications which are lower than EVO voltage specifications. If your automatic charger shuts off at 12.8 volts then it will never fully charge a EVO battery with a minimum charged voltage of 13.2v. Do not charge a Ballistic battery over 14.4 volts. Over charging a LiFePO4 battery can have dramatic results.
Lead acid isn't an option on the 999, as its mounted on its side. Have to agree that Lithium is the future but there still seems to be some way to go before its totally dependable for everyday use. I have to remember though that this is a supersport thread. The lead acid battery on my SS needed lots of topping up to stay fresh and lively and also benefited hugely from the desulphation facility on my automatic electronic charger when it got heavily discharged one winter. AGM batteries give a much heftier wallop for starting than lead acid and are maintenance free. I got a genuine Yuasa with 220 cold cranking amps for just over £50.00. I think the SS ones are rather smaller, so should be less than that.
Motoelectric make a kit but it comes from America and isn't cheap. It piggybacks onto your existing cables for a relatively simple installation. However, if you are confident with electrickery, many people reckon that cables from Halfords work perfectly well.
As old rider said, halifrauds cable will be fine, you'll need to just replicate the cable from starter solenoid to starter motor and from the battery to the solenoid. The main thing is that the ducati cables are tiny, but even halfords cables will be double the thickness. Its up to you if tou choose to change the engine earth lead also, but its not essential. This is what I did: 900ss Ressurection | Ducati Forum How I miss that bike
Another link in the chain is the starter motor commutator, which suffers from a build up of muck over time. I don't know if it's possible to get the cap off with the starter in situ with the SS but if it is, cleaning it up should be a simple matter. It's not a job I've got round to yet but apparently it makes a big difference. Great thread Sev!
technically or in reality? In reality I have fuck all other than her noise in my left ear, and a big space in the garage. Technically, in order to keep the insurance policy running I bought a frame and V5 and an engine in pieces in a box for 50 quid as its gearbox was obliterated. I thought about building a little special from it, although with my current levels of skintness it may be the next millenium project! The frame is an FZR400 and the engine is an FZR600R's engine. might be fun- hence the random question in the other bikes subforum about swingarms and fairings
Good project. I had a gsxr 400. Motor was a bit weak compared to the Hondas. They say the fzr400 is also a bit limp. A 600 would work nicely
