Hiya one and all...... New member here and potentially MTS 1260S owner who is enquiring about living with the 1260S.. Basically what are running costs/ servicing costs and importantly reliability like ? I haven't road tested the bike yet and plan to change early 2019, so that should help me decide on its suitability (I've had ZZR 1400s, GTR 1400s and an S10 etc before, which I know are very different bikes) Any advice would be appreciated
Morning and welcome. You'll love it. Can't compare a Italian machine to a Japanese machine for pure riding. The current Multistrada does that well. Get a road test in and don't look back.
Running costs Tyres 3000 to 6000 miles a tyre depends on your riding style / weight etc Service 600 then yearly or 9000 miles? First service 200 to 250 pounds Second service or annual up to mileage of 18000 about 250 a service 18000 mile a liver and a kidney required 800 to 1200 ish Chain and sprockets 15000 to 20000 miles Cleaning and keeping looking nice like any other bike but Ducati’s do not like salt and need looking after regularly to keep them mint No reliability issues Buy one and don’t worry If your a worrier take out the extended warranty at time of purchase Fuel 40 to 55 MPG depending on your wrist
If you go for the S model factor in a set of brake pads (front and rear) about every 10,000 miles at around £150 if you install yourself. +1 on taking out the Ever Red extended warranty, ideally for an extra 2 years (4 years total from new), as it's transferable to the new owner if you sell and therefore has some "resale value". You'll also need to budget for some accessories, even if it's only radiator / oil cooler / engine guards, screen protector, Sat Nav mount etc. It's easy to spend a few £k if you go for the Touring and Urban packs, keyless fuel cap, aux LED lights, comfort seat etc. (and that's just the Ducati accessories). Whatever you do, don't look in the glossy apparel catalogue that comes with a new Ducati - this could save you a fortune. Even after the capital outlay and maintenance costs, I'd say that my biggest cost of owning a Multi is for ferries, hotels & meal plus a fair bit for petrol - that's because I love touring the continent on it
Thanks for the detailed replies it helps to know what to expect after purchase I won't be looking to buy one until early 2019, but chances are that I will be taking a test ride before then
As Steve has said above, farkles to enhance the touring capabilities cost a fair amount but the cost of trips that you'll be inspired to go on will add considerably to the overall expense of owning a Multistrada, plus the additional tyre wear, fuel and servicing that go with the extra mileage. I have three European trips lined up for next year already which will probably cost something like £5-6k all in.
We (that's myself and four local mates) tour every other year so touring wont be a regular thing, however I do cover quite a few miles each year whilst riding locally (about 6000) so tyre wear, economy, and servicing will be a consideration for me. I have sat on a MTs in the local showroom in Ballymoney and it feels very comfortable for me, more like sitting 'in' rather than 'on' the bike and the quality of trim instrumentation and related components looks to be very good My Kawasakis have always lived up their claims of being super reliable and only one (a ZX 9 R ) ever failed me back in 1993 and TBH that was my fault (over revving) so I have never had any complaints Because I'm a Kawasaki man through and through, buying a MTS will be a big decision, having said that I did have a new Aprillia RSVR Troy Corser replica back in 2002, so this wouldn't be my first Italian experience Thanks again for the responses and keep them coming as I always treat every day as a school day Rog
Got my 1260 in March this year and it now has 11,500 miles on the clock! I couldn't live without it! As for running costs much as has already been said in the way of servicing except the 18K should be about 1,000, never paid more than that on previous multis but depends on the dealer charges. Tyres have been Road 5's from new and the front tyres last about 5K miles and the rear about 6K miles. Front brake pads changed at 9,000 service, rear still OK. Again from new I had a gold AFAM DID Chain fitted rather than the OE rubber band, so far adjusted twice, once at 1K miles and again at 9K miles and then only a very small adjustment. The front sprocket will need changing at 15K miles, showing signs of wear now. I found the clutch very stiff and have fitted a DucaBike 30mm slave which is smoother and lighter then the OE slave. Only reliability issue is that the quick shifter went intermittent on down shifts a month ago, replaced under warranty and fine since then. When I got it I found the "factory" suspension set up too soft for me and have tightened up the front and rear to suit me. Took a few miles to get it how I want it and it is trial and error but everything is easily adjustable to get the right feel of the bike. The 1260 is the best Multi so far and does everything you need one bike to do, track, touring, local rides etc IMO
Be interesting to see what you think when you get it.....youve owned some big mile munchers that are notoriously reliable. Z1000 owner here as well as my duc....its never given me one issue in getting on 5 years now and is my daily commuter and if i do go long distance i use that.
