Hello everyone ! There's a 900SS Darmah, 1979 registered, for sale near me, that the owner is asking £7500 for. I've heard it run, very quiet mechanically, looks really nice and like it needs nothing. Only problem is, as there are so few about, I'm struggling to get a good clue as to the value in the deal. What do you think? I'll try and get a couple of pics on later
I don't claim to be an expert in Darmahs, having never owned one, but on the face of it £7,500 looks very reasonable indeed. Probably somebody else will soon be along to buy it at that price if @Skidpanalley doesn't. What do you think @Mr.R ?
From the photos, there are some non-standard parts such as omission of indicators, lowered footrests, different rear suspension units, extra brace between the fork legs, aftermarket air filters, braided brake hoses - all done in the best possible taste. Looks like FPS wheels and Conti silencers - if so those are the good parts to have.
Cheers for the info, guys. I've never had a Ducati before, though I've ridden a couple (750GT and a white frame 900SS). I've also not spent so much money on a bike before, so am a little cautious....
Looks very tidy indeed. A DOC club member was thinking of selling one in a similar condition two or three years ago. He brought it up in conversation at the club stand at Stafford show as he was also struggling with pricing. He was thinking £5k ish - until everybody else told him that was way too cheap... IIRC he put it up for circa £7k, so £7.5k sounds about right (provided the motor is spot on).
@Pete1950, did you just quote the lovely Miss Cupid Stunt in there ? @Skidpanalley, buy it. You may regret if you don`t and you can always sell it if it doesnt scratch your itch.
The combination of roller big-ends, low delivery oil pumps, minimal oil filtration, and lack of an oil cooler do rather imply a need to do the best you can with the lubricant. And changing the oil frequently is pretty much all you can do.
A mate had a 750GT way back when, and I remember him changing oil every time he changed his socks... Agip if I remember right
Hi. I had a Darmah SD back in the early 80's, absolutely loved it, but it wasn't the most reliable of bikes, unfortunately I had spent out on buying it and didn't have the money or a local dealer for servicing etc., and it was my sole means of transport which it wasn't really up to. Fortunately, this one hasn't got the Campagnolo wheels as they were prone to cracking rims and cush drive failures in the rear hub. Things to watch for with the Darmah: Regular oil changes are a must. Clutch centre nut comes loose. Clutch and throttle cables break regularly. Fuses are behind the headstock below the tank, check for loose fuses and weather protection. The fibreglass seat unit can crack above the rear shock mounting, they changed the seat unit on later Darmah's. Otherwise they are a more civilised alternative to the 900SS, as they had Japanese clocks and switchgear, electric start etc. From what I have seen around £7,500 seems about right.
