1200 Looking To Buy A Multi But Not Sure Which One To Get

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Spinup, Dec 7, 2015.

  1. So,
I see there are a few variations and upgrades but not sure which way to go.
I have a 2014 Tiger sport which I am looking to either px for a multi or sell outright so I am probably looking at one for around 11.5k.
Ideally not one thats done loads of miles or due for the big service.

I ride quite spiritedly and always seem to find suspension limitations especially on the triumphs - speed triple 1050, the older 955 and the tiger sport- although only had someone setup the suspension once.

Is the electronic suspension better than standard if the standard is setup correctly? how much of a difference do the ohlins upgrade make and what would that cost?

I also quite like the Pikes Peak colour scheme, what would it cost to get a good paint job if I bought say a silver version.

    thanks

  2. Ooooh, can of worms so I'll get my 2 penny worth in first. 2012s Touring and buy yourself the Ohlins aftermarket Suspension Contrl Unit. Best engine for tuning and as far as I am concerned, best handling. Andy

  3. Hi, so why not a 2013 on model with the twin spark motors and revised screen. Buy the standard ABS model and upgrade the suspension to quality components.

  4. So why not a 2013 onwards with the twin spark motor and revised screen. But the standard ABS model and upgrade the suspension to quality components.

  5. The silver one is the GT, which I have

The bars are higher than the normal 1200S as the risers are higher. It also has different seats (more comfortable over distance) crash bars, spots and heated grips and full top box and pannier luggage which are again larger than standard geared for distance touring. The twin spark motor makes me laugh as it pulls superbly in sport mode but still trying to fine tune the suspension to harder spirited riding ....for touring its excellent and have done 450 to 600 mile days and felt fresh at the end of the day when my GS was good, but not that good ........ from what you said the Pikes Peak would be more specced to your riding as its the sportier option

  6. I love my 2012 s sport model. Ohlins electronic adjustable suspension, carbon bits and a great engine. You have a lot of choice within your budget have fun looking.

  7. Squeeze another £500 & buy a new base model Dvt multi.

  8. Read my posts in the multistrada section....ignore my lounge posts.
Single spark with Ohlins and Mechatronic suspension was best when set up correctly.
Cjs tune made the engine perfect (best bike ever).
Twin spark not as good with cjs tune, however skyhook was better if you cant be bothered to get it set up right.
No vested interest as I've no bike to sell....only to buy one.
++45k miles on 2010~2013, MTS1200S bikes inc PP.
IMHO based on written reports in press and on here...the DVT isn't sorted yet.

  9. The Dvt is well sorted ( and that's honestly not just because I own one )
I've owned many motorcycles, the Dvt is a stunning machine to ride

  10. My 2013 is for sale in the classifieds at £11k.

Having had a 2010 and a 2013, I'd say the engine is more "raw" on the 2010-2012, but the suspension is better (S versions) on the 2013-14. The 2013 engine is smooth, but not necessarily more powerful. Both are great bikes, so go with the best condition one you can find for your budget.

Things like screen, etc. we're improved for the 2013, but as an iteration, rather than a radical change.

    Hope that helps, happy hunting!

  11. Have you riden a sorted version of the earlier bikes for any sort of mileage?

  12. He means the skyhook suspension... Which is good.

  13. I do. It is. Thanks Paul. [emoji6]

That said, I believe the box of tricks that Ohlins brought out (suspension ECU), makes the original "S" version Ohlins pretty damn good too!

I'd imagine they are not so common though, and I don't know if you can still buy the Ohlins replacement ECU.

  14. I don't know about new, but they come up on here for under £200 quite often.

  15. In which case, to the OP, that is another option... Find a good clean example of a 2010-12, and add the Ohlins ECU to improve the suspension. The actual bike should be cheaper, but probably has more miles on it... [emoji6]

  16. Go and ride some and see which you like - loads of secondhand ones out there. I personally wanted Skyhook, so got a very low mileage '13 bike earlier this year for substantially less than what I've have paid for new. I didn't like the DVT engine character so it was a fairly straightforward choice.

I personally like the Touring spec extras - panniers, heated grips, GT style taller screen, top box.

I would narrow it down to whether you want electronic suspension and whether you want DVT or not. If you happen to be down in the South West I know that GT Motorcycles in Plymouth have a big selection of secondhand stock and are amenable to test rides and part-ex deals.

  17. Totally agree with the above statement, and that's why im finding it hard to change my 2010 S Sport 9000mile, CJS tuned,QD exhaust, ohlins Mechatronic and carbon blingy bits!!

  18. As @MotoNik says, try some. And try to decide what you want?

Certainly a fully fettled 2010-12 like @Boomer is a raucous beast, and all the better for it. I don't think any later models can actually match that "feel". A 2013-14 is close, but the engine just doesn't have that "rawness", if that makes sense. It's a cracking engine, and feels smoother. Want a smooth engine? The 2013-14 is your bike. It comes with Skyhook as well, if you get an S model.

Want (arguably) smoother again? Then consider the DVT...more expensive, and as mentioned here, you will be looking at a base model.

If the standard suspension is all you want, that could be great.

That said, as has been mentioned, there are many secondhand bikes on the market, so you can take your pick.

Have a look at mine, listed in the classifieds, just as an example, to see what you can get for your money. Have a look in other places too.

  20. Well quite! [emoji5] ... They are all good, so it depends what you want, and how much you want to spend.

Older bikes will have more miles (generally), but will (generally) have been fettled and sprinkled with goodies.

New(er) bikes will have fewer miles, but possibly have few, if any sparkly bits. New new bikes will have none.

    Choices choices. Happy hunting!
