Thinking of decatting but would like some recommendations on what exhaust system to go for. Is this job easy to do myself or would I need the dealership to do it if it needs a remap or whatever? Cheers, Dave
This topic has been beaten-up pretty good. Termignoni is the way to go if you want an all-encompassing kit with fuel up-map. Akrapovic if you want titanium. Leo-Vince if you prefer cheap and stainless steel. Both the latter will (should require) a fuel re-map. A Rapidbike unit is the simplest method to re-balance the fuelling. Your ECU remains stock. I'll let others chime-in for the installation.
I've read a few posts about the 1200 & DVT decat. Would the 1260 be the same? Has anyone got anything to say about the Quat D shotguns? I quite like those. Also didn't realise you could decat and still use the oem exhaust so might just try that option. Would I need to get a remap if I did that?
Regarding doing the job yourself; On the face of it it is simple, just remove the belly pan, slacken off the exhaust nuts - and that's when things can get a tad tricky. The nuts are made slightly oval before being done up and are very tight the studs are just 6mm and prefer to shear rather than to come undone........ I too am looking to de-cat so will watch this thread with interest.
You will find they are noisy as hell once de-catted. Expect to be fined if you use any of the roads with noise measuring gear active. Also expect some hassle in parts of Europe. All the silencing is done in the cat so whatever you do with the tail pipes, makes little difference. Some manufacturers have a DB killer that fits inside the de-cat, they quieten things down some, but can still be noisy. The noise factor is why I have never swapped mine. I have done the whole antisocial look-at-me thing in the past, but moved on I even started putting DB killers in my superbike systems to quieten em up a bit. I dont really want to pee people off, and want even less to tip off the old bill that I may be moving on apace from a couple of miles away.
Lextek do some really nice looking end cans. I spoke to the MD a little while back and he said they had a decat pipe. I think it could be an interesting system. The silencing is done by the end can as opposed to the Cat on the stock system. Hell of a lot cheaper than Termi or Akra too.
Conceptually, the 1260 is not any different from the 1200. The QD Semi-full system Magnum for the Multistrada 1260 is actually very nice. Since it's homologated even with the catbox removed, you may be be able to run it fine without a re-map. Some of their packages require a RexXer reflash. I would just ask them for what they recommend. BTW, the OEM exhaust is not a silencer/ muffler. It's just a straight pipe and cosmetic. As other on this and many other threads have mentioned, the actual sound suppression is done at the mid-section. Using a de-cat mid-section with it will be unbearably loud. As an aside: You may want to also question the value for the money spent on an exhaust system. It's all mostly bling. Lighter forged wheels will actually yield some really noticeable performance handling enhancement.
True that. I didn’t say they were cheap but they will improve the performance of your bike immensely. Light forged wheels are a much better value than an exhaust. Moreover, you can now have two different sets of tires for different applications but you have to buy another set of rotors. Last but not least, they have a resale value.
And depending on who you insure with, if it comes in at less than or equal to NMT 5% increase in BHP, you're unlikely to be charged anything extra. At least that's what I found when I had the full Termi + Upmap fitted to my 2015 plate 1200 Pikes Peak, when insured with MC Direct.
What wheels did you get on yours and did you feel much difference? Changing to Marchesini’s or OZ’s is only about 6lbs reduction in weight but then again that is nearly a 30% reduction.
In my case, I went the OEM way and paid the premium of the forged Marchesini's that came with the bike. I figured it was more efficient to ask for forgiveness afterwards (with Mrs D) than ask for permission beforehand.
I get that. Women just don’t understand the need for lightweight wheels. It would be really interesting to ride two bikes, back to back. 1 with standard, 1 with lightweight wheels. Pics of the bike and wheels please.
I like that termi over the longer titanium that is usually seen with the full system. Is it fitted to the CAT or have you also decatted. Can any slip on be used? Debating now whether to go the lightweight wheels option and a nicer slip on
Totally agree, touring with a really loud system can be hard work after a while, european police are more alive to noisy pipes than our police and there's always the mot issues. This issue has been well debated on here, don't do something you may regret.
That's true about the 6 lbs savings in unsprung weigh. However the bigger benefit is the loss of rotational mass. In other words, reducing the gyroscopic effect.
Gone for the decat option, for now . Might look at the wheels if some come up at a decent price but I'm not paying £2.5k + for some. Just awaiting delivery of a termi end can that should be here tomorrow. cat weighs a ton. Just thinking of how to hide the exhaust valve cable now !?!
You can run the exhaust cable in front of your foot peg and zip tie it to the brake line at the bottom, next to the rear master cylinder - that’s how the instructions that come with the Termi have you do it. Pretty well hidden.
