1199 Looking To Finally Buy An 1199, Need Some Advice.

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by P1505C, Jun 4, 2018.

  1. Hi all.

After wanting the 1199 for a long time, even over the 1299 (can't think why but thats how it is) I have found a couple of options. I'm looking for some advice. They are based upon the location of the dealer, the part exchange deal they'll do me, and a few other little bits.

The first is a base model, 2013: https://www.laguna.co.uk/pages/used...-1199 Panigale ABS *Reduced*-1198cc/27407.htm

    The second is an S, 2012: http://www.hughendenm40.co.uk/bikes/used/view/28139/2012-ducati-1199-panigale-s-abs

The S has a 4mm crack in the TFT, I could buy a new screen at some point but it would be annoying until then. Not a deal breaker. The base has had three owners.

I'd go for the S in a heartbeat but I've been offered more in part exchange by the dealer of the base model bike. Also I know that dealer ver well.

Is there much difference really for the occasional after work or weekend ride? I wont track it? I'd be looking to keep the bike for life, it'll go alongside my Monster (the first Ducati I ever owned) as a keeper. I have a test ride booked, is there anything I should be looking for?

I'm not rich, I've been saving a while, so this is a big purchase for me. If you'd not go for either, I'm happy to sell my bike privately and wait for a better deal.

    Cheers. :)

  2. Hi P1505C and welcome to the forum.

Both bike look lovely. I cant advise or comment on the difference between the two as I have an 1199 S and never ridden the base model.

With regards to the crack in the dash you cant actually buy the front screen for the dash you need to buy the full dash assembly. I know this as the dash on my bike was cracked when I bought it. Not to bore you to death but I had no joy whatsoever with a warranty claim through my local dealer. The only option they gave me was to purchase a full dash assembly which they would fit. Cost was just shy of £1000, totally ridiculous. Also a note on fitting a new dash to the 1199 the millage will return to zero as it is stored in the dash assembly not the ECU like the 1299.

I ended up removing my dash and splitting it myself then cutting the Perspex out. I fitted a carbon surround and new Perspex and I am really happy with the end result. It was a bit tricky but the crack really annoyed me.

Good luck with whichever option you go for. :upyeah:

Good man, pleasing to see someone who isn't held to ransom by the dealer network for a change. I have fixed a million and one different things over the years that most would have thrown away and replaced and saved a fortune in the process!

  4. Hadn’t thought of that! My mate can cut glass on his CNC, I’m sure he could so plastic. May be worth getting a few made.

I think I’ll go with the S. Otherwise I’ll always wonder.

Regarding the link to the S above....the advert says they'll give it a cambelt service ...? The 1199's, I'm sure didn't come with cambelts. In 2012 they moved to chains for the Panigales. Get them to do the major Desmo service instead! But for a service that major, you;d probably want a Ducati specialist doing it? I'd probably get a quote from a Duc specialist and ask them to knock down the price instead of servicing it themselves....especially if they open it up thinking there are belts inside to change!

Also, the S is a 2012 model, there were quite a few changes/upgrades/refinements that the 2013 bikes got. If you're set on the S model, might be worthwhile seeing if you can stretch to a 2013 onwards S model?
All the best in your search! I loved my 1199 even though it was hard work at times!

  6. Yeah I spoke to them about that. They are having a Ducati Dealership perform a complete service before the new owner picks it up.

  7. One word............"S" :)
    .
    .
    Wait, that's not a word, it's a letter...............and now I've typed more words.............and again, bugger. :worried:

    .
Anyway, in loads of words, buy the "S". :motorcycleduc: :)

  8. Welcome to the 4rum. Rum it is.

Imo the S is worth £1000-1500 more than the base, looks better, and is better. No comparison.
Screens crack all the time, if you are handy you an repair it.
Visibly check radiators for damage, mine need replacing at 6000 miles at £400 each.
If you tell the dealer your predicament, he will probably offer the same as the dealer selling the base model.
    Good luck

  9. Here’s my dash before and after I repaired it.

    After

In the picture I had fitted a Matt screen protector which I have now removed as I didn’t like it. It made the screen look a little blurry. Anyway no more cracks, happy days.

Keep us posted you your choice. :upyeah:

  11. That looks great. Did you remove the dash entirely to open it up? Was it screwed together or glued, or clips?

  13. I’ve had a 1199 base model and now have a 1299S. I’ve used both of them on the track and road. I know there was quite a few differences from the 11 to the 12, but as far as the difference between a base and an s, it’s mainly the wheels and the suspension. To be honest, I couldn’t tell the difference between the wheels. The suspension is better on the s, but not by much, in my opinion. Sure the s looks better, but for me, I would say the value between base and the s in terms of my riding perception is only around £300 or so. Just my opinion, others are available......

  16. Yes I had to fully remove the dash. The Dash is glued together which does make it a little difficult to pries apart. I did make quite a lot of marks around the outside of the dash getting it apart but once the new carbon surround is fitted it hides all that so it wasn't a problem.
Once you have the dash split its just a case of dremeling out the cracked screen. I cut the screen out to the profile of the black edge.
Then all you have to do is buy some UV stabilised Perspex and cut it to fit perfect inside the new carbon surround, then glue the whole lot back together. Job done :upyeah:

Hahahaha don't know I would trust myself with someone else's Dash :cold_sweat::cold_sweat::cold_sweat:

  17. Well, a deposit has been paid. The bike is going to a Ducati dealer for a full service before I collect it so I have to wait a few weeks. Will be a 3-4 hour ride home, will get and post images. Starting to get excited, and nervous of the money I just spent!

  20. I've gone for a base 1199. A few trinkets on it in the way of C/F, performance seat and samco hoses so nothing really performance related, but I did read something previously about suspension repairs on the S when its out of warranty... I was swayed by condition, mileage and service history. I'm taking a 6 yr old, 6000ml bike that's got venture shield. I had a budget and didn't want to spend another £1k on a S as I intend to keep it 4 or 5 years and go all over again, probably on a V4 when they come into the affordable bracket (for me).

Very nearly had an RSV4 as I've said before in other threads, but I saw this and had to have it..
