1200 DVT Losing The Front

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Rover, Aug 2, 2019.

  1. Hi all,

This morning on my way to work, noticed the front is very light from "certain speed". Steering bar starts shaking one side to another if speed is pushed further. Feels light, wobbling and scary. o_O

It never did before so something is going on. All I can think to check when get home later on is the
tyre pressure or head stock bearings. (well, just if they are no lose or too tight, actually).
This is a standard dvt, so no electronic suspension, but I never adjusted. If so, would make it harder for faster rides?

Recently changed the tyres from scorpion trail 2 to Rosso 2, but can't think of blaming the tyre model. Only if something did not go right on balancing, but probably this would cause a different problem like vibration, am I right?

I would appreciate any other ideas for what to start checking.

    Thanks,
    Rover

  2. I had the head stock bearings replaced under warranty at around 10k miles. Didn't create any wobbling but very ”vague" steering on roundabouts and sharper bends.

  3. Top box and luggage? Wind also makes a difference

  4. There are a few threads on this and how to cure.

Assuming its not buggered bearings or something

  5. No, no luggage or top box. It is fact that I am getting old and fat, but not that much.

  6. Hopefully not! Will check later on. Also hope nothing to do with my front wheel reassembling when changed the front tyre. I followed every instruction by the book!:thinkingface::thinkingface:

  7. Couple of questions
Have you been to that speed before and its never done it - ie its new
Have you done it before since the tyre change and it was ok
When did you do the wheel

Some people do have issues with a light front end and bar movement at north of 120mph on these bikes

  8. Silly question to ask but I thought I'd ask anyway, have you checked the new tyre was fitted on the right way round?

  9. Yes, been well over there, about 1.65 and stable as a decent sport bike. starts shaking at 1.10 and if pushed it will throw me to the sky.
I think I tested after changing the tyre and it was ok, but maybe that was the changing point, when things started playing up.

  10. Yes mate. Double, triple checked before leaving the shop.

  11. Could it be the tyre is not balanced correctly? That would give headshake is massively out.

  12. I thought a bad balance would make it vibrate, but worth checking.
Do you thing if I lift with the paddock stand and remove the brake calipers would work? I mean, if is bad it would show even on the bike, wouldn't it?

  13. May be able to have a guide, I’d loosen the axle to so you have as free wheeling as poss

  14. :upyeah::upyeah::upyeah:

  15. They're not the most aerodynamic things. If you were 'pressing on', that can make the front end light.

  16. I’ve always wondered if the MTS would benefit from dropping the forks through the yokes a little.

On my old Tuono it was one of the first things you did.

    Anyone tried it?

  17. The old multi plenty did. Think a few may have done on the early 1200 too (sure there have been threads on it)

  18. Just done it!
While looking for my wobbling front, did some mods, the infamous exhaust valve, hardened the suspension (manually, it is standard) and lift the forks.
It improved the wobbling at short blasts, that's good enough for my own limits, now the cornering became much, much sharper! Got some pics from Google drive, links bellow.

  19. So how much do you have showing over the top yoke?

  20. I used the mark already on the forks where the polished ends as you can see in the photo. This was 14mm.
