Luggage On A Sports Bike

Discussion in 'Clothing, Gadgets & Equipment' started by Jimmy899, Aug 13, 2014.

  1. Hi All,

I wanted to put the feeders out here and see what sports bike riders do for luggage. For longer journeys at the moment I tend to wear my textile jacket and some protective jeans, however, I would rather keep my one piece on for longer journeys and have a luggage arrangement that allows me to carry a change of clothes.

I seem to be leaning towards a tank bag at the moment, I like the idea of keeping my body free of any additional weight, and having the ability to use my phone as a satnav. Having a race hump also means a backpack will be a little uncomfortable. I do have some concerns about a tank bag scratching my tank or not securing easily/properly, and I wanted to see if anyone on here has experience in this area?

    Cheers

  2. Not everyone likes tank bags, I think it depends on your bike and riding position as to whether it will be comfortable or not. I think they are great but yes you can scratch the tank with them.

  3. I have a biposto 999S, the Ventura rack system works really well when I need to load up.
Aside from that, your only real option is a tank bag but make sure you have some rubber netting to place between the tank and the bag. It should protect from the worst of the scratches (lesson learned the hard way).

  4. Bags Connection tank bag system is superb. Petrol filler cap mounting ring means the bag never touches the tank and is more secure than a normal tankbag. It actually prevents scratches when touring too as it effectively covers the area that is otherwise exposed. Very easy to put on and take off when refuelling. Highly recommended.

  5. +1 on Kreiga best stuff out there by a long way IMHO

If its a tank bag, the Kreiga Tank and and US pack are just great, easy to take off/flip over for tank filling (something of a necessity on a Ducati)

You can then use the tank on a Kreiga rucksack or attach it with straps to the tail piece too.

Oh and I use a Kreiga 30 litre rucksack on occasion with one piece leathers with a biggish hump (is it me or are these bloody humps getting bigger, would be nice if you could remove them) and the rucksack is absolutely fine with it

  6. Kreiga are by far the best quality gear out there and completely waterproof as they use dry bag systems and are fully guaranteed.

I can't stand tankbags as they stop me from leaning over the tank which is something that you do a lot on a sports bike. Some people dont seem to mind for some reason.

I use the Kreiga tailpacks and have a 30litre main bag and two 20 litre side bags that strap onto the main one (think I got the sizes right?). The straps are a bit 'creative' to attach to the Panigale but it has worked well and I've done around a 1000 miles with them. Only mistake I made was not putting the rear seat unit on when I went to the Isle of Man so I've got marks on the paint of the rear seat plastic cover but that should T Cut out easily enough.

  7. Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated. I have actually dug an old Knox backpack out of the garage, it was a forgotten present - it fits well around the race hump so will do for the moment.

For longer journeys I think it will have to be a tailpack as I do shift about the bike a lot, and I can now imagin a tank bag getting in the way.

  8. Luggage on a 999? Impossible.

  11. What works for me on the 999:
Tiny magnetic tank bag - so small it interferes with nothing and I use it every ride to accommodate wallet, phone and sunnies. You should glue some very thin neoprene from a dive shop to the bottom of any bag. End of scratch problems. So bloody obvious you might wonder why manufacturers don't adopt it.

Tail pack on back over biposto seat. You're good to go and you won't even notice you have any luggage.
