Lumpy Multistrada 1000s Ds

  1. Hello, I'm new. Let's see how long it takes me to ask a stupid question....

Anyway, I recently acquired a 2005 Multistrada 1000S DS - yes, it's a genuine S. It's a project bike, 95% good, 22,000 miles, belts done etc, nice and noisy Termis and a few other bits. It's now down to getting detail sorted.

The main, er, detail is that it runs like a bag of washing, either stalls or wheelies, shakes my eyeballs out from low/lower-mid revs throttle openings, but I can tell there's a good bike waiting to get out.

At some point in its life it's had a Power Commander - though not there now, although I understand that Ducatis and Power Commanders don't really talk to one another.

I've had it on a rolling road, but the guys admitted they didn't really know much about Ducatis. Bit of research led me to believe that an ECU remap was needed. Now, two questions:

    1. I'm in Cheshire; the recommended Ducati ECU re-mappers seem to be in Bristol, Peterborough, Winchester or Scotland. Is there one closer to me?

    2. The guys who do the remapping are clearly very good - lots of testimonials from racers and so on - but is a full re-map what I need? Or is there a more straightforward way of getting it running more sweetly? I'm not fussed about it being fast enough to be a BSB front row qualifier, just a bit smoother so I can see the road ahead in focus when I twist the throttle.

    Thanks.

    Ian

  2. Welcome Dave. What about a close by dealer?

  3. Your in the wrong area for technical try putting in the appropriate section

I liked the 1000DS just too tall for me

Welcome to the rocky and rolling mad house :)

  4. I got the impression that the dealers were (a) bloody expensive and (b) weren't as good at sorting out lumpy runners as independents.

  5. Welcome,

    www.multistrada.net is a fantastic resource.

There is a tuner from Italy on there called `multigatto`. Send him your ECU, and he will send it back mapped for your set up.

There is something called `fatduc` which slightly alters the fuelling/air ratio so it runs better at low revs. All the info is on the site.

I believe Cornerspeed in Nottingham are good at the sort of tweaks you need.

And you are right. There is good bike in there.

    Reds faster tho...;)

  6. I saw the heading and thought it was a comment on the styling.

  7. first duc v.twin? took me a bit of time to get used to keeping the revs up a bit when riding slow. very jerky down there. maybe just needs idle issue sorted.

  8. Tps reset?

  9. Yep, first Ducati v-twin. Mainly Japanese four-bangers apart from a CCM and a Kawasaki v-twin about a thousand years ago during my cruiser phase (takes longer to say "during my cruiser stage" than the length of time I had it).

I think I may have researched too hard on this one. I got the impression that it wasn't as simple as taking it into a dealer and telling them to get it running smoothly as part of a regular service.

It actually feels like it's running more smoothly when cold than hot, which sort of tied in to what a few people have said about the mixture being a pig to set up, and different maps for each cylinder because the vertical one runs hotter.

Still, it just doesn't feel like it's running right. If i just feed the throttle in from a standstill it seems to fluff and bog down. Feels like it needs a blip to clear it's throat before feeding the clutch in and pulling away.

    Bradders: what's a tps reset...?

Anyway, back to the original question: anybody in the North West recommended as a good sorter-outer, or is it a simple case of taking it to a dealer and getting them to plug something in and factory reset or something?

  10. Throttle position sensor. Mine went a few times in the year I owned one. Made tickover when hot erractic and would sometimes sit at 5k and not go below.

  11. Ah, no, definitely not that. Idles steady as a rock. Throttle response is fine, it's just the motor doesn't seem to like what the throttle is telling it do.

  12. Thanks bob. I'll have a delve. Appreciated.

  13. Which os why I say TPS, as thats where the fulleimg and throttle are working independently

  14. Moto R in Ruthin

They seem to get universal praise from all that have been there

Richard Green worked for Woods, Abergele since they started, had all the training, has all the diagnostic kit as well as the most valuable bit, the knowledge as a time served Ducati mechanic. He set up on his own a couple of years ago. Transformed by 1000DS from an ugly crock of shit to an ugly sweet running, enjoyable ride.

  15. yip t.p.s couldn't remember the term yesterday. dont blame me, blame the Guinness.

  16. As well as a TPS check, get the balance checked, when well balanced they pull smoothly and clean from just over 2000, well mine does!:Smug:

  17. listen to him ^^^ he may actually know what he's talking about ;)

  18. Get your beautiful new TPS's here :D

  19. again you should be able to test it 0-5v or 5-0v from the signal wire of the tps (cant tell you which)when you twist the throttle
