M And P Regulator

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Roadtrip, Aug 21, 2022.

  1. As i need a new Regulator for my 1994 900ss I've been looking at a straight swap over using the same connectors and still be able to use the warning lamp on the dash (without have to run a separate warning lamp/monitor) has anyone used this one from M,P if so did all connection and lamp work as it states.

  2. Check Electrex out as theirs will probably be mosfet based. Slightly more expensive.

  3. The M,P regulator arrived today and as soon as i got it of the box i could see the connectors didn't seem the right size,

when fitting the male connectors are a smaller diameter and fall out of the female ones on the original loom and fitting the double rubber male/female connector it doesn't push in and again different diameter and not deep enough, so on the phone to them and now sent back.

  4. Looking at that one Dan i think it looks the same connectors but it could have been a good cheap spare one,

Looked at Electrex one and the fitting instructions mention you don't use the original loom but straight to the battery and no warning lamp which is a shame,
    Thanks both for your help.

  6. Anyone know of one that can use the original loom and keep the warning lamp or change the connectors on the loom but still keep the warning lamp, as mentioned above most i see run direct to the battery and no warning lamp which might have to be the way i go.
I did phone MotoRapido and Ducati do a kit which consist of a reg and a small loom which is a direct fit but is
    £290 :astonished:

  7. Could you cut off the incorrect m+p connectors and splice in the original connectors from the old one?

  8. I did think of that but didn't want to add any spliced joints in as thinking along the lines of its a charging system,

I might have sent it back to hasty as what i will do now is measure the original connector sizes and get the same and if all fits order another one, i did ask M,P that as it doesn't fit can i cut the wires and if i have no luck send it back as it won't fit anything else, you know what there answer was  just need to get a battery for my vernier calipers. :)

  9. You will probably need to splice in a new SAE 2 pin connector. I'd use crimp on butt connectors and heat shrink sleeve but don't solder them.

  10. Thanks i did wonder what they are called, i was going to do that as two separate connections.

  11. why not solder them?

  12. Because in an environment where the harness us exposed to vibration the point where the solder and the stranded wire meet becomes a focus for fatigue and eventually cracking.

  13. Might help others in the future,
Thought i would give the faulty regulator a clean to see if there was any details and there was, the company that made the original one is still trading and making them for Ducati, Moto guzzi etc,

Found one of the Italian manufacturers (Ducati energia) supplier but in the USA, i have emailed the manufacture to see if there is a UK supplier which i doubt as the cost, plus post and possible import from the USA will mount up.
