M1000 Mosfet Reg/rec Conversion.

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Nasher, Dec 27, 2022.

  1. I've wanted to convert my M1000 to a MOSFET type Regulator/Rectifier for some time.

I converted my old M900 and it made a big difference to charging, plus of course the newer tech unit generates a lot less heat. And I've also recently converted my 1000SS.

The issue with the conversion on a M1000 is space.
The Reg/Rec is sited under the saddle, not behind the headstock, and is bolted down to the top of the oil breather box.

The breather box is a complicated molded shape, and there simply isn't room to fit the newer MOSFET Reg/Rec.

Firstly, I should say that despite all the arguments for and against the standard breather system I decided I want to keep a standard(ish) system and do not want to fit a separate K&N style filter on a pipe connected to the engine breather outlet.

I did think about slicing the upper raised sections off the breather box and plastic welding on a simple flat top section, which as you can see from this image should be possible.

But even with a flat top there is very little room under the saddle as the MOSFET is significantly taller than the old unit.

  2. What I did have to hand is an old M900/750/600 Carbie Oil Breather box:

This will do the same job, but freed up a lot of space to mount the new Reg/Rec on a simple Aluminium plate, with a little angled bracket to attach the Carbie Breather box.

If it all works OK I might make a new plate with the box mount integrated as a folded up tab.

Next job though, will be to convert my 999 to a newer style Reg/Rec as well.

  3. And you're doing all this in a freezing cold garage?

  4. I find an old bike jacket the ideal thing to keep me warm this time of year whilst tinkering.

  5. I've no problem keeping my body warm but a couple of weeks ago with the temperature at -6ºC it was my hands that made me give up after about 15 minutes. Every tool I picked up was also at -6º and I lost feeling in my fingers very quickly!

  6. Carmo Electronics (NL) makes plug’n’play Mosfet reg/recs for all our older Ducatis (and more). No need for cable mod or else. Ref. ESR531 is labeled for M1000 S2R (2005-2008).

May be this would fit your M1000 without any mod/fabrication involved ? Their hotline is pretty good as they could probably give you the exact dimensions .

  7. Thanks Guillaume69, great if you want it to look standard, but How much:eek:

My conversion was @£40 all in using used parts from Ebay.

  8. Nash, does that include the reg/rec?

  9. Just get the Panigale, Diavel… or newer R/R off eBay or similar and the Triumph link cable for less then £80 for the pair. These very rarely fail nowadays so no need to buy new.

  10. Yep, just need to keep an eye on Ebay for one that comes up Buy it now really cheap.

Yes, but all three Reg/Recs I've brought off ebay have cost me less than £30ea. And all three are from later Ducatis.

Most people who are breaking a Triumph now know that the link cables make the newer Reg/Rec a plug and play exercise on lots of older bikes, so I ask private sellers listing other parts if they have them.
Perhaps they are not aware how sought after they are so I've been picking them up for £5 or £10 a pair.
They are only @£35 new from a Triumph dealer though.
But I like the fun of the chase.

  11. Cool. I think when I did my first R/R conversion on the 848 the link cable was less than £15. That would’ve been probably 8 or so years ago….

  12. And £30 is a real bargain. :upyeah:

  13. Don't be tempted to buy the cheap pattern brand new ones.
I'm told some are the old tech in a new style housing.

  14. Is there much airflow under the seat to cool the reg/rec? First thought says no...

  15. Nope, no airflow.

But, my thought is that if Ducati put the std one there, and the new one generates far less heat, it will be OK.
It's also now bolted to a large Aluminium plate that is open on it's back side to any air flow.
Whereas the std set up bolts it to a plastic box connected directly to the crankcase breather.

Whichever way you look at it the replacement is better with regard to heat generation and dissipation.

  16. Agree with the above. The Panigale R/R gets zero airflow and is mounted on a plastic tray. It’ll be fine there especially with that alloy heat sink.

  17. We've not had it that cold down here, but I agree, handling freezing cold tools is what eventually sends me indoors to warm up when I cant feel my fingers properly any more.
We are only @10miles inland from the South coast, but @500' above sea level on the South Downs, and a couple of weeks ago at @-2deg I had to give up.

I'm also doing some refurb work on some bits I've removed from my boat for the winter, and have some other random bits and pieces to get done, so can't waste too many of the increasingly rare opportunities I get to spend some 'me time' in the workshop.
