Hi folks, considering putting sequential indicators on my 2009 m1100s, there seems to be some differing opinions on how to control the flash rate, some have said there is a separate relay and some have said this is controlled from inside the dash. Can someone who's actually done this conversion please shed some light on it. Not really interested in running resistors if I can get away with it at all. Regards,Dave.
The indicators are controlled by the dash not a relay. I can't recall if the original indicators are LED or not (I sold mine a few years back) but would guess that 2009 vintage bikes didn't have LED as standard fitment. If I'm right and they're not LED then you'll need to fit resistors (although these should be built into the lights you buy or be supplied with them if they're from a reputable source). Standard indicator bulbs are 21W or 10W, LEDs are a fraction of a watt per LED so there needs to be a resistor in the circuit as the LEDs themselves won't draw enough current for the electrical component in the dash that operates the indicators to recognise so it can do it's job.
Thanks buddy, I've blown the idea off and just decided to look for none orange bulbs and call it done. I really dislike "bitty" looking wiring solution.
I put Rizoma LED’s on my 90’s M900 they came with separate resistors that had to be wired in. My understanding now is you can buy a specific LED friendly relay that does away with the need for separate resistors.
I looked at the adjustable relays but on my year its all controlled from inside the clocks. Nuisance.
