I have a 2016 M1200R that I bought to replace a 2015 Monster 1200S because I found the suspension too soft on the S model. The R was better but still not great. I finally got round to looking at the forks this summer with some help from K-Tech who have also reshimmed the rear shock for me. I managed to get hold of the Ohlins spec cards for the forks on both the R and the S model and K-Tech supplied with some replacement shims to try in the forks. However upon taking the forks apart i found that for some reason Ohlins had added an extra, small, shim into the pack to space the shims off the piston in both legs. This small gap allowed a small amount of oil to pass without pushing past the shims and effectively softening the suspension. Normally you have a large shim sitting next to the piston with all the others above it getting progressively smaller. It's an easy job to do at home but you will need a special tool to remove the cartridge from the fork leg. With this smaller shim removed the performance of the forks has been transformed and they're a lot firmer. You can completely lock the forks out if you wish. This probably isnt relevent for most R owners but if you use yours on the track or fast road use then it makes a huge differance. I was running my forks with both comp and rebound fully in before, now I'm about 14 clicks out on rebound. Wanted to share what I found incase anyone is thinking about changing their forks like I was.
I just got my R and the previous owner had it on comfort which just sitting on it felt way too soft I’ve doalled in the normal settings for now - are the sport settings on for the road? I haven’t ridden it yet as I’m waiting for the logbook to come through.
Without being cheeky, how heavy are you? I’ve lost about 16kg over the time I’ve had mine, now around 73kg / 11 1/2 stone. After losing the weight I found it a bit firm so I’ve softened the forks on mine a touch to make it a bit more compliant on sh*t road surfaces
