M796 Start Up/choke Or Cat Converter Fault?

  1. Hello everyone.

    I have a niggle I'm hoping you can add insight to. I have a 2010 monster 796 (15,000m).
When I turn on the ignition everything starts up fine, rpm goes to 2k for 3-5 seconds, and then back down to 1.2k as it should. Then the idle slowly drops until it cuts out at 800.
Initially this was an intermittent fault, but now it happens every time. Once I take off the throttle response is fine. After a couple of minutes it idles in neutral at 1.2rpm as it should.
At first I thought it was an air or oil temp probe issue, but this happens even when the engine is warmed up ie in the petrol station.

The previous owner (bike purchased at 13000m) had installed a chip to bypass the emissions exhaust valve, but set everything back to factory for the sale. Could this be sticking?
It has been suggested to me that the valves need adjusting (which is now due as per the service schedule), but the symptoms don't seem to point that way to me.
    Any opinions would be appreciated.

  2. I wouldn't say it was the valves, sounds like a sensor issue. Remove the "chip" and see how you go. That said it could be a TPS issue. Either way the way to go is remove the emissions chip, get the bike back to standard and then see what you have
