Can any of you guys recommend the best manometer to buy for setting up throttle bodies? Mainly on my 888 but would be a bonus to have one to cover various models Cheers Jack
I really don't know the 888 but I have some Guzzis and you need to set up TBs and carbs with them. I researched everything I could on carb balancers and their was only one type that came up with consistent praise, the downside was it's no longer made and you just cannot get it. All the other types seemed to have varying degrees of praise/ridicule in more or less equal measure. Do you mean an actual manometer or are you looking for a recommendation for a vendor supplied off the shelf item? The problem with using a manometer is that the engine produces a lot of suck and as mercury is now the devils work you would need either a huge manometer or something very dense to go into the tubes. What you could possibly do is bring them very close using gauges or the like and then use a U tube manometer for the final fine adjust. However a BIG manometer will still be required. Given 1" Hg = 13.6" H2O you can see the problem. You could just make one yourself out of 2 or 3 meters of 1/4" tubing all you want is the levels to be the same height and your good. I just used E-Bay and got myself a 34" Dwyer manometer second hand for around £18 all in, any of the new ones seem to cost a fortune that are any good. There are also some other rather ingenuous devices made with bottles that are possibly worth a try too Another alternative is to use an airflow meter like this https://www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/car...ols/synchrometer-airflow-meter-for-dhladcoes/ Not sure if any of that helps or not John
That's spot on John, I had one of the Dellorto ones but sold it will old kit car, That's not really what im after tbh, Maybe ide be best to get the bike up on lift and ide have a better idea what I need once I look at it, Do you Rate the Morgan gauges at all or are they poor?? This is the one ive been thinking http://www.carbtune.co.uk/ Cheers Jack
I always like the 888 series of bikes TBH I wish I had one instead of my 1098, beautiful bikes. I have a Guzzi that looks quite similar but that's another story If it's anything like the Guzzi what you are looking for is a tapping point on the inlet manifold after the throttle bodies/carb, usually it's an M6x1.0 cap screw, remove that and fit an adapter in to measure the pressure. With the Guzzis I use the Davida supplied attachments and tubing or a 6mm ID plastic hose like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clear-PVC-Hose-Pipe-Tubing-Food-Grade-Fish-Pond-Car-Aquariums-Air-Line-Tube/261408670856?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&var=560302314366&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Personally I've never used the CarbTune Jack so I can't really say much about it. I think the Carbtune uses metal rods and springs, Ride magazine seem to like it & it's pretty cheap so not much to lose. It's just a method they have come up with to mimic Mercury manometers. I see they supply dampers which are just restrictions, if they were still pulsing a lot (which is the usual complaint with these devices) you could use narrower gauge tubing or get some form of needle valves into the lines. In the past I've used Davida gauges, which I still have, but I haven't got around to comparing them to a Mercury manometer yet. https://davida-helmets.com/products/davida-vacuum-gauges That is really funny after all the years I've had them and it's a looooong time, the design has not changed one bit, mine are identical The Davida gauges certainly seem to work Ok, when I balance the Guzzis with them, and get the balance right on the gauges it certainly improves the running. I'm lucky as I have some Mercury from way back and I'm planning to fill the Dwyer with that. The problem with Mercury is it's toxic to us and the bikes, Mercury and Aluminium just don't mix well, so even if you have it you need to be dammed careful using it. That's why the plan for me is to rough tune with the Davida gauges then fine tune with the Mercury. Oh and that hand made device in the YouTube vid. What you're looking for with that device is not the levels to be necessarily equal. As long as the fluid levels are stationary then you have equal pressure in either manifold. Again no idea if that's much help or not.................I need to try that home made thing myself at some point too
No that's very helpful, Think I will get a set of the Morgan carbtune ones, Have just got my hands on a full SP exhaust so best fit that first before setting the TB's up, Don't know much about Guzzis but I do like the 888, Stunning bikes
Hi Jack Magni's in general are pretty thin on the ground. It's all Guzzi running gear, electrics etc: Magni designed and fabricated the frame and bodywork. Including the twin arm parallelogram swinging arm He made a few different models, Classico, Arturo, Sfida (various models), Giaponne 52 and Australia, the bike pictured. I already posted a thread on firing it up after some delving into it's internals to do odds and ends and some info is there if you're curious, mine was new in 2000 https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/magni-australia-first-fire.63260/ As far as manometers go looks like you have the answer from other members, I'd go Carbtune or Davida personally, rather than any electronic type, cheaper, they work and don't go out of cal much compared to electronic type. Oh and your 888 is stunning, thanks for the picture
