848 Maximum Rear Sprocket Size

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by comesunt, Mar 13, 2015.

  1. Hi,

I'd want to order some rear sprockets. I recall a post statin the 848 can't take anything bigger than a 43 or 44 at the rear on a standard chain length as the wheel will rub on the swinging arm??

Can someone please remind me of the issue.
Much appreciated; I'd like to get the order in tonight if possible...

    Thanks,

    Bob

  2. Depends whats on the front.

  3. Be surprised if you cant get at least +3 on the ear as thats nearly std then, so maybe +4 would be safe-ish

  4. Yep; sounds about right...
I'd also appreciate thoughts / knowledge on how many sprocket changes I could make without adjusting the chain length.
I'll start with a long chain and 15:39. wondered if I could then put on a 42 using the same chain length?
Don't really want to have a selection of chains as well...
    Thoughts??
    Cheers,
    Bob

  5. The aperture in the swing arm through which the chain runs limits the size of rear sprocket

  6. I'm sure goes without saying, but as I have the guide stick out for andyb anyway, remember you will need to reset ride height when you change gearing. I'd expect to have to adj chain with every change

  8. Think you will find even a 41 tooth will require a longer chain!

  9. Really? might have to do a rethink then...
    I've ordered 15, 39, 40, 41, 42. Also got a 14; just in case...
So you reckon I could go from 39-40 in with one chain; but need another for 41-42 (taking the 14 out of the equation for now...)

Kit should turn up next week...

  10. Yep and imho the best gearing for 848 is 15/41 :)

  11. So, 98 links and a longer wheel base; or 96 and make the bike shorter....
    Thoughts??
    Cheers,

    Bob

  12. 15/41 and don't change the wheelbase if it were me.

  13. I'm running 14/39 your saying the better set up is 15/41 but you need a longer chain by how many links?

  14. From memory i think 102 i think, twas a while ago!

  15. When buying a D.I.D chain you get the option to choose how many links think 120 is the biggest.
I went from 39 to 43 on an 1199s and I think the D.I,D chain was shortened by 10 ish links
Not sure if the distance from center of front sprocket to rear sprocket are the same on the 848 and 1199

  16. A natty tool on Gearcommander is at the bottom of the page which shows you the distance between sprockets as you change them & the chain
    Stock 15-39 98 Links
    Current 14-39 98 Links
    Custom 15-41 102 Links

Shows an increase of 24mm between sprockets

    Interesting is this one

it shows that 98 links & 14/39 is not a good combination for wear
