Metzeler Td Slick Vs Metzeler Rr Slick Vs Pirelli Superbike Slick?

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by Android853sp, Feb 10, 2022.

  1. I’ve ridden a 1098R with the Metzeler Racetec RR and a Panigale V4 with the Pirelli Diablo Super Corsa SC. I would say on balance, I was happy with both but I couldn’t discern any difference. The last outing on the V4, I had the Pirelli Superbike slick which was a big step forward over the RR and the SC. Now I’m on the Multistrada, both the RR and SC would be fine but I’m wondering about the Metzeler TD slick which comes in a slightly better size, 190/60, than both the Superbike and the Racetec slicks in 200/60. Has anyone got comparative experience of the TD slick and the full fat slicks ? Andy

  2. I use TD slicks on all my track bikes now on euro track days, even the 1199 R.
They are very consistent in any track conditions, in Middle Group, occasionally Fast Group, rears last for 2-3 days, fronts up to five.
If suspension is properly set up and adjusted for conditions, wear pattern is consistent.

  3. I've switched to Dunlop gp racer and won't be going back to slicks in a hurry. The bit of tread just gives me a bit more confidence after sitting in pit lane due to a red and cooler English temperature.

  4. Depends what you’re comparing them to mate

    which Sc’s are you running ? 1/2/3?

i tried those TD slicks in Portugal and although the rubber physically lasts well, the actual outright grip doesn’t match up to an sc1 or 2 by a fair margin in my opinion.

after a few sessions the rear was struggling. Bike wouldn’t turn that well and I never had much confidence getting on the power beyond two sessions. All in all not a great feel or connection.

but that is to be expected.

  5. Agree. If you want time attack avoid Metzeler TDs.

  6. They last well because they don’t have as much grip. But they have plenty of grip for most.

But that’s like comparing say a supersport road tyre with a hypersport track tyre. And the TD tyre is more likely to work well in a wider variation of conditions rather than need a sc1, 2 etc depending on temp, track, rider.

Worth a go imho and @Expat Jack loves his

  7. Yeah they’re fairly okay value so as this man says, worth a punt.

They do feel a bit like a road tyre to me. Not sure if it’s the profile or generally the silica content of the tyre for longevity. They wear well to the eye but again as this man says, you don’t generally get outright grip and longevity in a bike tyres. It’s a balance.

It was frustrating for me as I felt they were gone after a few session although they still looked great. Spent the rest of the time fannying about on the throttle because she wasn’t talking to me.

I’m sure riders both better and worse than me would do fine on them. “Worse” riders for use of a better word won’t care or notice probably. Better riders just ride through the “issues”.

  8. I didn’t like them either, but that was years ago and sure they have come in since. Bear in mind they claim (still I assume?)you don’t need warmers.

I did 2 trackdays on a set and gave them to a mate who did 4 or 5 race meetings on them!

  9. That tyre warmer claim is a lie!!! I put some on, went straight out and I'd never do that again. Nearly lost the front immediately going at a very slow pace in warm weather. Don't risk it kids!

Other than that though, I liked them for trackdays and other than that one time, never had any issues running at the sharper end of advanced groups really. Bit of movement in the rear and left many black lines, but I think that was poor suspension setup more than the tyre and the tyre was having to do too much of the suspensions job. I think if you wanted to really push on though, probably better off paying a bit more as said above.

  10. I like them and they are fine for my abilities. I use warmers every time. They do wear much better than SCs in my experience and I seem to recall the compound is basically the road sc compound (might be wrong). Rear can be flipped.
I got 5 uk days out of the rear on my 675 Daytona and have a new set ready for my GSXR.
I have had a couple of rear end slides when they are coldish after long pit waits. But warmers and easyish first lap and they are good.

  11. We used Metzeler TD slicks in Spain without warmers, but it was over 40 degrees track temp and it was open pit Lane so we could just roll out and build up and within a lap they were fine. I would use warmers in the Uk for sure
