I guess I asked the wrong question in my last tyre thread. What I meant to ask is that I think I need to change my Michelin Pilot Classics and I have heard nothing but good about the Michelin Pilot Road 3 tyres.. My main question is - can I mount them (or any bike tyre other then the OEM Phantoms and P. Classics) with inner tubes? Is this a big problem or non at all? The reason I think I need to change; 1) Bike is 5 years old with 4k miles under the belt on what I think are the original Classics 2) I had an 'incident' the first time I took her out - 30mph - wet and slushy road - driver in front suddenly decides to come to a full stop to let someone out of a side road (????) I didn't understand as we were in a flow of traffic so why they didn't just continue I don't know (misguided good samaritan?) Anyway I was at a safe distance but, as you are, a bit surprised to see a VW Golf's brakelights turn red in front of me. Under (some) control I slightly touched the front the the rear brake and applied full pressure to the front. Result? Both wheels locked and I performed a 1m skid as you would on a road tired scrambler bike on wet grass - no problem, stayed upright , handlebars went at 20 degrees to the left and I came to a full stop. An exhilarating experience I don't want to repeat - hence the question! So can someone please enlighten me?
Iv'e have just had a pair of pilot road 2 fitted to my GT,haven't had a chance to try them yet. They were £243 supplied and fitted.
You can fit any tyres as long as they are the right size, the inner tube is needed only because the rims aren't airtight but are a standard modern shape apart from that. I fitted Pirelli Angels on mine, just get the tyre you prefer.
Thanks Dave I hear good things about Angels too so it's all down to the cost I guess. Should have known about the tubes but the last time I had them was on a 1985 Harris Triumph Tiger .....
