Hi all, just bought a 796 that's fitted with Pirelli Corsa 3s...These tyres caused me plenty of anxiety when I had then fitted to my Triumph Daytona 675 some years ago. I found they took ages to warm up, fishtailed a lot and gave no confidence in the wet. I have had good experiences with the Michelin PR3s and PR4s fitted to a 999 and a Street Triple in the past, especially when the roads are sodden - and I seem to do a lot of rain-riding.. I searched the forum but couldn't find any reference to anyone fitting PRs to a Hypermotard so I wondered what you guys thought or would recommend??? Thanks
I've searched on your behalf, and michelin have confirmed that the tyres simply do not know what bike they are fitted to, so if you like them, the need for validation by a gang of Internet strangers becomes a total non requirement. They'd only tell you that pirellis, metzelers, Dunlop, Bridgestone, conti and Cheng shin are best anyway, it's just the way it is
Father in law has pr4's on his blade Very good all round road tyre. I find them a bit vague on the front end but honestly his have lasted over 8k !!
I had PR4s on my ZX6R and they were awesome They will be fitted to my Hyper 1100 once my crappy Diablo 2s have worn down
Unless you can be sure of riding only on dry roads I can see no good reason not to fit top quality sport-touring tyres to most types of bike. I will avoid fuelling any debate about which brand to choose.
"The machine offers surefooted handling in all weather conditions, thanks to the combination of the ribbed front Avon Speedmaster with trusty Safety Mileage at the rear."
Hi @Moo! I was in the same predicament as you having bought a 2012 796 HM a few months back. It was still on its original Pirellis and the front was on the wear bars. I fitted a new pair of Michelin Pilot Road 4s and am very pleased with them. One thing I will say however is that I do get head shake under heavy acceleration. I'm not sure if this is a byproduct of having the confidence to pin the throttle due the grip the new tyres give, whether I'm holding on too tight under acceleration or whether there's something about the PR4s that isn't compatible with the 796's geometry. I've only done around 1000 miles on them though so it's a learning curve. Grip-wise they cannot be faulted though. They warm up pretty quick and inspire a lot of cornering confidence.
Possibly more noticeable as you've gone from a worn profile front to a new tyre.... Worth a bit more compression damping on the rear to stop the front unloading as much ? (Im sure fitting a higher 1100 Hyper seat would make all the difference...and not just because I'm selling one....honest.....ha ha ha)
Head shake on a hyper is normal. Blame super motard geometry. Personally, I love it. I shriek inside my helmet when it does it, it's like the bike is asking to be abused more and more. :sunglasses:
Thanks @gcon45 ! That confirms my thinking - I have so many good memories of cornering with PRs over 2 different Ducatis that I can't see me fitting anything else. I guess everyone had their preferences but they do me!
You have to go with whats good for you....ive given up reading tyre reviews....I regularly get dragged through the coals on here for saying that M7rr's are shite (read the reviews - pitched directly against the supercorsa) not even close, I had them on my rsv4 and felt they were dangerous so fitted them to my z1ooo - just the same. Plus on top of that they wear down pretty fast as well...im just waiting for that to happen. The other thing is tyre wear....ive never had more than 3k out of any tyre ever in 25 years of riding bikes so how PB, Fast Bikes etc etc quote tyre life of 8k or whatever they must be driving the fucking thing round in the back of a van. So, ive made a point of trying something different every time then making a note of said good tyres....so far the surprising tyre for me is the pilot 2. I had a really good second hand spare from a mate and bought a new rear for the hyper....really good - ive got a set of avons to go on next...
