Minimum indicator spacing?

  1. Hey, been doing a bit of research but looking for a definitive answer;

I'm looking to place some flush indicators on the undertray of my carby 750ss but was reading that if the indicators need to be at least 230mm apart to remain legal and pass an MOT? How is this so considering the some rear ends of bikes have integrated lights and do not fit this requirement. I'm slightly confused!

  2. Hi m8,
I was gonna put an led brake / tail light with integral indicators on my 848 but decided against it for that very reason.

Do some bikes come factory fitted like that? I wonder how they get around it then.

  3. I've never seen a bike with intergated indicators, only lights. Indicators would be illegal and it wouldn't pass an MOT.

  5. I'm not sure if I understand that...

I was looking at the back of a 749 today and the indicators off the tail tidy were blatantly closer than 230mm together. It's kind of thrown a spanner in the works for my mini project. I may call an MOT tester and see what they say.

  6. Don't think there's a minimum spacing for the MOT?

I have an integrated rear/stop light on my 916 which also has indicators that flash orange (red goes off if the lights are on) they are obviously very close together so I also have the standard indicators for extra visibilty I asked the MOT tester re. the legality and he said that there is no spacing distance specified in the regulations, only that they must flash orange and within a certain min/max flash rate.

As is sometimes the case the law might say differently as what passes an MOT may not always be quite road legal...

  7. This very subject was discussed at great lenght on the 'now gone' forum. Some posted up a link which stated where lights had to be etc. I'll see if I can find it.

  8. (ii)Minimum separation distance between indicators on opposite sides of a vehicle– .
(A)A motor vehicle (other than a solo motor bicycle or a motor bicycle combination or an invalid carriage having a maximum speed not exceeding 8 mph) first used on or after 1st April 1986, a trailer manufactured on or after 1st October 1985, a horse-drawn vehicle, a pedstrian-controlled vehicle and a vehicle drawn or propelled by hand: .
500 mm or, if the overall width of the vehicle is less than 1400 mm, 400 mm
(B)A solo motor bicycle having an engine exceeding 50 cc and first used on or after 1st April 1986– .
    (1)Front indicators: .
    300 mm
    (2)Rear indicators: .
    240 mm

Taken from the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989. As far as I know, if its fitted come MOT time is has to be fitted correctly. If there not there come MOTal you'll get is an advisory.
