Mirror Glass Damaged By Glue

  1. Hi,

The mirror glass on my 959 mirrors is possibly damaged as a result of taping them over on a track day.

I just used electrician's tape, which has worked fine before, but for some reason the glue has left marks that look like the glue has corroded the glass.

Assuming it was just residue glue, I've tried using WD40, applying heat, and white spirit to clean up the mirrors, none of which has worked. It looks like the glue has possibly even corroded the glass.

If I can't clean them up, it looks like I will need to buy whole replacement mirrors rather than just being able to replace the glass which is annoying.

Has anyone on here experienced the same, and any tips for removing the glue?

  3. Update:

I was able to clean the glass!

I really thought the glass was corroded due to some reaction with the glue, maybe it wasn't actually glass and it was some sort of plastic reaction, and it also didn't feel raised. So far, the marked areas had resisted all attempts to clean up.

Anyway, having read I couldn't just replace the glass part, I sort of had nothing to lose, and tried some graffiti removal chemical I had (don't ask )... and even this required some elbow grease, it was stubborn until the chemicals did their magic, and then I was able to clean up the mirrors to be like new again - phew!

  4. Buy a bottle of isopropyl alcohol. Keep it in your garage. Its damned handy stuff.
