2011 848 evo Hi folks, just managed to limp home from a ride out. Bike started misfiring/bogging down at different speeds but mostly happening around 5000 rpm, then will clear and jerk forward and be ok for a bit then do it again. Worst time is when pulling away in first gear and 2nd gear when it will badly stutter and sometimes cut out unless less I ride the clutch and rev it a lot, once moving it will be normal for a short while then start playing up again. It progressively got worse over about 20 miles until I just made it home, it feels like its something electrical breaking down to me rather than fuel but cant be certain. I've dropped it off at my mechanics but any ideas what it could be ?
Could be reg/rec (eggy smell sometimes) or coil pack or plugs. Or a gummy fuel line or injector. Lots to choose from I’m afraid. Start with the easiest.
Try the relay at the side of the battery. That fies the coils and injectors. Change them both the other one is for the fans
You no what I did notice a funny eggy smell, thought it was coming off the fields by the road but perhaps it was from the bike!
Over charging of the battery causes hydrogen sulphide to be produced - smell of rotten eggs. Had this on a Triumph D675. The RR had failed and took out the battery. The battery itself was swollen out of shape. Not long after this Triumph replaced all the RRs on the D675 with a Mosfet version.
How old is your fuel? I put my 2011 848 evo back on the road on Saturday after 6 months tucked up. It was running perfectly in Oct, but now very rough across the rev range - although would clear occasionally as OP describes. Topped off with £9 of Shell E5, thinking it would dilute / flush through after a lil ride. Skip a few miles, and the first time I come to a complete stop, I notice the tail is on fire. Impossible to put out, and in no time flames are spreading and the plate holder had dropped off. Luckily a guy was washing his car right there and chucked a bucket of water over it, saving the bike. As far as I can tell, the cans got so hot, with the ECU richening mixture to compensate for poor fuel quality, that as soon as airflow stopped the exhaust band rubbers and then under seat plastics went up from radiant heat. I never imagined a fire was possible like this, and won't be trying to ride with old / bad fuel again! Anyway, maybe drain any old fuel and try some fresh Esso Supreme (apparently has no ethanol)?
That must have scared the shit out of you seeing the bike on fire! Mines got fresh fuel, ridden a few times recently before it played up. Filled up 2 or 3 times the last few months,, also filled up on the day with Esso premium from my regular garage. Bikes in at my mechanics, hopefully he will look at this week..
damn, my fuel is old too - probably 7 months. I did fill it up to the brim with the supreme fuel though Was just going to take it for a long run and then refill with fresh fuel
After thinking the bike was sorted after new coils, TPS reset, throttle bodies adjusted, new plugs, new fuel filter and pump checked/cleaned VR wiring plug replaced, today its started with the same symptoms again. It ran well the other day but today its started playing up again with the bogging/stuttering between 3-6000 rpm, above that and she runs fine. Now have it booked in with BSD on there dyno, have to wait until the 13th of June as they are booked solid. Over the phone they think it could be a relay as they have seen it many times on Ducatis with same symptoms so will check that and also a custom map if needed. Suggested that the ecu could be detecting an issue and then compensating by over fuelling at lower revs which is causing the bogging possibly fouling up the plugs, Just want this sorted now as been dragging on : /
unfortunately no codes on the dash or when my mechanic plugged in to his scanner, hoping getting it on the dyno will give some clues but something is making it run rich. This is a new plug (front) going to pull out the top one for a look soon as I get time
If it's only on one cylinder. Have you checked your injectors? Could be slightly clogged/stuck open. Also, buy cable kit from lonetec https://www.lonelec.com/ And download iawdiag https://www.von-der-salierburg.de/download/GuzziDiag/ That way you can scan your own codes for cheap. Don't forget to test fiat cable before use https://jpdiag.xooit.eu/t737-Cable-confirmation.htm
Thanks need to check other plug tomorrow and see if both cylinders playing up, not checked injectors yet will google how to do that. Will look at the links iawdiag thanks, no codes on dash at the moment
You can to some extent just eye them once removed, blocked holes or gummed up etc. Clean with brake cleaner and tap them like a generator. To really check them you need an injector tester. If they look suspicious or if you have only one cylinder with rich mixture i would just replace both injectors to rule them out. In iawdiag you can also see soft codes with does not show on dash and stored codes if they have not been cleared.
Thanks put a new fuel pump relay in and new plugs and its still running like a pig even cut out on me twice after it got up to 84 degrees when I got stuck at a railway crossing, pulled away and it just cut out restarted while rolling and did it again. Have to wait a few weeks now to get it on a dyno, its booked in for the 13th June
I'm still thinking it's fuel related. Have you tried E5 fuel and injection cleaner such as stp? How was the rear plug? Also black? Does it run bad all the time or is it intermittent?
Its intermittent but often and worse when hot, might ride ok for 5 mins then play up again. If I go hard on the throttle it will pull through it and clear but will return soon after and always between 3-6k. I only run it on Esso premium (E5), not tried injector cleaner but was thinking about Seafoam. Both plugs the same, i fitted a new fuel pump relay and fresh plugs yesterday and rode 10 miles got home and both plugs sooted up again, it was running ruff within a few miles and got worse I guess as the plugs fouled up..
