i never got the point of kate bush..yes she was unique but that voice could scratch diamonds...sadly modern pop doesnt allow people like her to exist anymore, whether you liked her or not, i wish there was still room for real artists to express themselves the way she did.. now its all corporate bullshit (which it was then, but she regailed against it, which is no longer possible), centralised commercial radio playlists that play the exact same tedious, predictable, generic, formulated muzak that is aimed at a market researched demographic and leaves no room for self expression or artistry. the days of the likes of Bowie, Dury, Elton John, Freddie et al are long gone..now its crap like so and so, featuring blah de blah..then next week its blah de blah featuring so and so with a rehash of the same turd. Even the likes of Boy George and Duran Duran look like real innovators compared to the souless, faceless dross that passes for commercial music these days.. I took a depressing look at the top 20 a few months ago and the entire chart was compiled of something like 12 different 'artists'...almost every record was manufactured by Sony/BMG...almost a total monopoly.. it all started to go seriously downhill in the 90's when the charts were dominated by saccharine cover versions and identikit boy bands. These days the likes of Adele seem to be legendary because she has an acceptable (but certainly not extraordinary) voice sung over an obsessively repetitve and childish chord sequence...No one has heard of the likes of Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter and the numerous other outstanding female singer songwriters..kate bush included... Can anyone seriously imagine Wuthering Heights, Bohemian Rhapsody, Ziggy or vurtually any other meaningful pop record even being recorded these days, never mind actually making it onto a commercial radio playlist? Sadly the days of real human voices and musicians making music warts and all are long gone in the world of commercial music...the one remaining element of current pop pap, the human voice has even been eroded, auto tuned, chorused, mult-layered and processed to the point of being utterly synthetic.. 'Im not in love' by 10cc is a vocal triumph of a real band with real voices using layering and multi tracking properly, and the result?? Rather like a Ducati motorbike, it never gets old..it just turns into a classic, a thing of beauty forever. signing off*.... for now.
