Monster 1100 Evo Advice

  1. Hi,

I've got a Monster 1100 Evo in my garage which I've owned from new (well it was ex demo at 400 miles) which I bought in 2013. I used it for commuting for 3 years and put 39k miles on it. I had a few electrical issues and then had a top end refresh a year or two ago at 30k which cost me a fair chunk and was then advised that a bearing was likely to go in the next 2k miles which would mean an engine strip down and lots more cash which I couldn't afford. I love the bike as it was so nice to ride, great power, lovely sound through the termis and light and flickable and hence I've been loathed to get rid of it but since I bought a replacement last year it's just been gathering dust.

Any ideas on value and where I might be able to sell it, if I was mechanically minded I'd love to take it to bits and sort but I'm not. It was riding fine last time I rode it (before the winter)?

  2. That’s a difficult one.

If what you write is true, and the engine in fact needs a complete tear down to get some bearings replaced, the cost of this and perceived inconvenience and further anticipated possible costs by a potential buyer you will have to deduct from any market price.

I assume you are honest and inform a potential buyer of the required engine work.

I would expect a significant price reduction should be expected, without being able to give any precise monetary amounts.

Some would probably not even buy it, unless the price is silly low to compensate for the price of a complete new engine.

  3. How/who diagnosed that a bearing would fail in 2k? what are the symptoms?
I have done 48k on my 1100 evo & still running sweet (had new valve guides etc @40k)

  5. Honest as the day is long. It's frustrating as would love to keep it as I prefer it to the newer Monster I have.

  7. Motorapido who I bought from who are always very helpful, there's a rattle consistent with bearings but would have to take engine out to properly diagnose. 48k, you are lucky, perhaps I buy another 1110 EVO and keep the old one for spares (not that I could fit them)

  8. Maybe look for a low mileage replacement engine, they come up cheap occasionally on eBay, always a risk of course with a second hand unit but I’ve had good luck with that route in the past.
