Monster 1200/821 Fairing

  1. Hi all, just put a deposit on a second hand new shape monster and wondering if it is worth getting the small fairing that is available, does it make any difference to comfort on longish journeys at motorway speeds ?

    Cheers

  2. Hi David, I've got the 821 Stripe, one of the reasons I choose it over the standard 821 was the small fairing as I think it enhances the look of the bike greatly but TBH it only gives a little bit of wind protection up to about 40-50 mph in the normal ridding position, beyond that you need to really tuck down to a race pose to get any wind protection and even then it's not great.

  3. I'm guessing this question is referring to the little belly fairing that can be fitted to monsters? If so I can't really comment anything useful on that front...

But I can say that we bought a taller puig screen for Mrs M's 796 and she reports that this has made a huge difference when pressing on, wind buffering above 50 is greatly reduced and takes much less if a squat to take shelter now...

Could be worth considering for you.

  4. I me a small headlight fairing can actually make quite a lot of difference, depending on your height. :)

  5. I'm 6'2" and have the standard Ducati screen on my 1200S. I'm not convinced it makes much difference - if you're riding into a headwind you'll really know about it at motorway speeds. Most of the time I find the bike comfortable up to 90-100. By about 130 it feels like my head is going to come off.

Interestingly, I noticed a significant reduction in turbulence when I took the stock mirrors off.

If I was going touring I'd seriously consider a much taller screen, although the Style Police might have me banged up for gross indecency.

  6. Have you tried it with the screen off?

  7. The first week or so that I had the bike was without the screen - the supplying dealer forgot to fit it. My impression at the time was that the screen was a slight improvement.

It may be more useful for someone of more modest proportions, perhaps - I'm probably a little tall for it to really be of much use.
