Monster 1200s At Last

Discussion in 'Monster' started by The real Ray, Sep 5, 2023.

  1. I've just sold a 998r that I'd owned for 20 years. In about 2006 I rode a Ducati UK Monster S4rs and thought if I ever sold the 998r a Monster S4rs would be a good fun ride.
But when the time came I decided that a newer monster was a better bet.
After not being quick enough to bag a few bikes I set off in a van to buy what looked to be an immaculate 2018 M1200s about 200 miles away.
The bike was indeed immaculate and had some nice extras on it, termi, evotech rad guards, tail tidy, dash faring, bar end mirrors and the standard parts had been retained. The deal was done and the bike was home last Friday evening. Been out a few times and the initial impressions are good. Very easy to ride, the wind blast is not too bad at all and the quick shifter up and down works well. The fly by wire throttle does feel a little different to an old school cable connection, but all the tech on the bike is very impressive after the very analogue 998.
Looking forward to a good few miles in the sun over the next few days

  2. Lovely example, congratulations and many happy miles
is the quick shifter an extra that’s been added by the previous owner?

  3. Very nice!

If it’s not already got them, get some throttle spacers, takes the slop out of the twist grip making closed to open throttle much smoother. Probably one of the best things I’ve done to my 1200R

  5. The quick shifter up and down comes as standard on a 2017 and onwards 1200s. Pre 2017 model year 1200s doesn't have a quick shifter. .
There is a small amount of throttle auto blip coming down the gears, only just noticeable at pootling about speeds.

  6. Yes, there appears to be quite a bit of slop in the throttle, bit like having too much play in the throttle cable. I think I'd read about the mod but forgotten that it involved spacers so thanks for the reminder.

  7. They're growing on me... especially when they're so neat and clean... wow good buy

My 2014 S doesn’t have either up or down, so I’m told, and I’ve never had the confidence to try it!
Do like the idea of throttle spacers, tail tidy and bar end mirrors though.

  9. Nice colour, pearly white? the same as the S4rs I rode years ago.
I think you are right, I thought I'd read somewhere that the 2014 to 2016 M1200s had a quickshifter but looking at pictures of the earlier bikes I can't see the quick shifter load sensor on the linkage.
I've edited my post to correct that, there is enough misinformation on the internet with me adding to it!!
On a non quick shifter equiped bike you can simply snap the throttle shut momentarily to do clutchless changes going up the gears. All a matter of timing that comes with a little practice.
The mirrors on my bike are NCS, some sort of machined alloy, surprisingly good view, but there again I've had years of 998/996 mirrors that give a great view of your arms and elbows.

  10. I thought the Monster only had a quicksilver for up changes, no blipper as standard

  11. Monster 1200s 2017 model year on definately has quickshift up and down with blip on the way down. My bike has that setup, its not after market, and its pretty smooth in operation.

    This from a test of a 2017 1200s
The latest version of the grunty 1,198cc, Testastretta 11° DS engine features new throttle bodies delivering 5bhp more than the outgoing ‘S’ model bringing it up to that magic 150bhp mark. While the Ducati quickshifter taken from the Panigale is now equipped as standard and that’s both up and down the gearbox with the autoblipper. It can be switched off or for use up the ‘box only via the new TFT display if required though I’d really recommend making the most of it.

  12. I stand corrected. Enjoy the bike, I had a 2014, absolutely loved it and should never have sold it

  13. Got some throttle spacers, fitted them this morning and been for a ride.
Yes, transforms the throttle, taking out the slack so you know the response is instant. Seemed a lot of money for two bits of plastic and a bit to remove and refit some screws but for deffo makes a big difference and fitted in less than 15 mins.
Starting to get used to sitting more upright and putting little effort into changing direction down the back roads.:innocent:

  14. I now fit the throttle spacers to all my Ducatis. I wonder why they have the slop built in??

  15. Where did you get the throttle spacers?

  16. Just got them off eBay. Also included the 3 pointed bit you need to remove the screws from the throttle housing.
Two of the screws are standard posi drive the other two need some sort of 3 pointed bit that I was pretty sure I didn't have so I went for the spacers that included the bit.
Some say you have to remove the bar end to fit the spacers. I managed to fit them without doing that.
There are a few vids on YouTube showing the fitting process.

  17. I fitted throttle spacers on my 1200r and it did make a useful difference. For some reason the ones made for triumphs were cheaper even though the throttles are the same, so I bought those.
