So I've just bought myself a monster 600, 1997 as my first 'big bike'. It's looking quite tatty so I'm thinking about tarting it up and customising a few things. Anyway my question is.. Is it possible to put a single sided swing arm on the bike I've got?
of course it is possible. Is it worthwhile? No, a single sider is much heavier and complete overkill and it would mean machining the motor crankcases and total bill for all the machining, parts etc worth more than the SS. The beauty of the SS range is the simplicity - hunt out an alloy rear swinger and improve the bike that way.
Have to agree, whilst it is possible with an S4R arm, and there is a how too on othe forums, would you want too? You'll easily blow £1000, the bike could be impossible to insure, may not handle as well and at best you'd have miss matched wheels unless you convert the front end as well. If you really want a single sided swinger on a Monster, save your money and buy an S2R, or an S4R....
Alloy swingarm from an M900/851/888 will fit and looks much better than the steel item - not sure it's much lighter though?
And then a bigger rear wheel & tyre. Mine started life as a M600 Dark in 1999 and now has a 900SS (£350) fitted with an 888 rear wheel (£50)/shock (£50) and an alloy swing arm (£75), M620 high level exhausts (£150), everything is possible and can be done on a cheap budget. I took me quite a while to get the bits together and I'm happy with the result, Monsters are great things to fettle with. Yorkie
If this is your first 'Big' bike you will soon be looking for a 'Bigger' one. Don't waste money on this bike, put the money away for your next step up.
I must admit I am looking to follow in Yorkies footsteps now as well with engine swap. I desperately wanted an M900 but medical bills have killed any savings I had
