Fettling the wife's monster now, on the list is belt change which I'm happy to do, got a set of exact fit bets to go on. Is there a definitive guide to the procedure on a 696? There seems to be plenty on older air-cooled 2V but I can't find a specific guide for this bike including torque settings. Also contradicting info on 5mm hex key gap on horizontal and 6mm on vertical. Can anyone clarify? Thanks.
Not done it on a 696 but I did it on my ST2. Using a 5mm hex key to fit round the guide pulley but a 6mm one shouldn't sounds familiar. This was on a 2 valver and my 4 valve Monster was next - but it got written off and so I never did a 4 valve. I have a 3 valve ST3 to do next but I haven't researched it.
The 5mm Allen key was/is used by many for the old carb 2V engines. Now most use frequency measurement for tension, plucking the longest run of the belts. The Exactfit belts should state the frequency on the packing, which I think is 110Hz although may be different for the 696. I use the Gates Carbon Drive app to measure the frequency
I didn't get on woth the frequency method. From what I remember, there are some YouTube vids that help (although be careful because some are wrong). I think ExactFit might of done some. Worth a look on their website.
