Hey, I currently own a triumph tiger 800 XC. However due to certain 'issues' It doesn't look like I will be keeping it for much longer (bloody triumph) but that's another story. Anyway, I used to own a street triple R and I still miss selling it because it was great fun to ride. Problem is that I have had one before so don't really want to go that route again, hence a duke monster. This will be my only bike and I will use it to commute on. Will it stand up to lots of miles in all weather? Or is it going to break down all the time a corrode before my eyes? Also my localish dealer is riders Ducati of Bristol, does anyone have any previous experience? What sort of mileage are people getting from there bikes? And what are the servicing costs like? I'm sure I will have more questions but can't think of. Any right now... Thanks for your help Phil
Can't comment on Riders in Bristol. The air-cooled 2V Ducati engine is known for being reliable & should give years of use if serviced accordingly. Any bike can corrode, certainly the 2V engines can show paint flaking from areas such as the front of the sump, starter motor & valve covers. But then I know people with Hondas, Triumphs & BMWs who have also experienced significant corrosion. An Extenda Fender & use of protectants such as ACF-50 can help to ward off corrosion. My GT1000 has some paint flaking, but then our county council puts down so much salt in the winter (even when there is no frost) that we have plants normally associated with coastal regions growing in the verges!! Why not take a test ride on a Monster to see how you feel about it & how it compares with your Triumphs?
Hi, the 796 is a great bike. I have had aircooled dukes for 30 years now and the last major problem I had was in 1992 so I think that unless youy are unlucky, if you look after them they are fine but remember, nothing`s perfect! I have an 1100 monster but tested a 796 too. If you are doing much town work the 796 is probably better, certainly smoother and the engine spins up nicely. The main dealers are expensive, I`m sure someone on here can recommend a good local independent for you though. The two year service with a belt change was £400 ish from the dealer I got mine from but I only took it there in case there were any problems while it was still under warranty. From now on I`ll be using Forza Italia in Silverstone. Bit far for you I guess but they are excellent.
I've had a 696 and I've got a 2 year old 1100 and neither gave me any problems. I use ACF-50 on my bikes and they still look good as new. I haven't tried the 796 but love the 1100. Arrange a test ride you won't be disappointed.
