Monster 900 Jetting ?

  1. BC224BA0-60B9-4AE9-BBF7-F900E857ED02.jpeg I’ve fitted carbon cans to my 1996 M900, standard air box/filter, it’s now popping on decel a bit and occasional slight backfire so I suspect is lean at the bottom end, I’ve got carb rebuild kits with new emulsion tubes, needles etc etc, and 150 mains and a choice of 42.5 or 45 pilots, I’m trying to decide whether to go straight to the 45’s or start with the 42.5’s ?, I believe the ones currently fitted are standard 40’s, at present I’m thinking if I find the 40’s partially blocked I’ll use the 42.5’s, if the 40’s are clear I’ll fit the 45’s, has anyone got a similar set up on their monster? Thanks Mark.

  2. Not an answer but I put BOS race cans on my '96 Monster and left everything else the same. I had no popping on decal just better low down torque. I suspected it would have been running a bit lean but no obvious problems.
I suspect you may have partially blocked jets but somebody else will be along to give better advice :upyeah:
    Nice looking bike

  3. I tend to agree Harry, I won’t be at all surprised to find the original pilots blocked, it’s possible that the current cans have just taken it over the edge into being lean enough to pop, the original mufflers would probably have masked it as well, so I recon the 42.5’s are the way to go, cheers.

  4. I fitted the 45 pilots, (the 40’s that were fitted were partially blocked as we guessed), no more popping or backfire on decel, I found it already had 150 mains fitted and tapered needles that were all in great condition so I refitted those, the emulsion tubes looked good too but I fitted the new ones anyway + needle valves etc, there was a lot of dirt in the bowls and on the diaphragms but nice and clean now, rides really well , plenty of torque , when I first went to start it the starter was stone dead! , quick phone call to Nelly and he pointed me at the small white connector on the back of the solenoid, he was right of course, thanks Nelly.

  5. If it’s popping on the over run then check the exhaust for leaks - unburnt fuel mixing with air drawn in through an exhaust joint leak. My 1993 900 does it.

On the jetting side, I used a Dynojet kit, stage two, with Leo Vince cans and an open air box with a K&N, runs like a dream. Older carbies were also prone to wearing out the emulsion tubes, the needle wears them oval. Worth checking if the carbs are apart

  6. Thanks Monsterped, it’s sorted now though, ref my previous post, cheers .
