Monster M600 problems

  1. Hi, I have a problem with my girls Monster M600 `98, if anyone has any ideas. Just off an a rideout filling the bike at the petrol station the bike starts stalling....it starts back up again then stalls....this happehs even when filled with fuel. She gave up and the bike was pushed home. Happened again at home until nothing at all would happen when the starter is pressed. Having found and replaced the melted wiring from the alternator, replaced the ignition relay, handlebar switch, checked the fuses several times and the starter relay/solenoid/starter motor, all of witch work, I`m now stuck. No obvious melted wires neither.
Help plz, before I have to look at butchering the loom!!!
    Thanks
    Jon

  2. Clean the effing tank breather circuit FFS......

    AL....Sorry, well p*ssed.

  3. Chill Al it's no good to your health and we all need a helping hand at times
    Even if it's simple

    Mwahh ;-)

  5. Which wire was melted? if regulator is failing/failed then both yellow wires will have wiggly appearance/show signs of overheating and/or melting. The regulator failing (if it is) is often caused by corrosion/resistance at the connector plugs just below left side of fuel tank (2 or 3 yellow wires and a black one). Is battery charging/charged?. As AL says blocked Fuel tank breather can give similar symptoms but unlikely to still be holding a vacuum after standing a while.

  6. Hi, ahh thanks Chris and Al but I don`t think I made myself clear, when I say nothing happens I mean nothing!!! Press the button nothing, no turn over at all, however when everything is tested its all good!! The only electrical item in the tank is the fuel level sender which also works, the battery is fully charged. All the melted wires have been replaced with higher spec new wires, as far as I know this wouldn`t effect it turning over anyway. Nope it is a true problem. There is no sidestand cut cut switch neither, only a warning light, that also works.mmmmm, No power seems to be getting to the starter switch and therefore starter solenoid.

  7. Have you had the kill switch apart. Maybe something in there is corroded and stopping it taking power

  8. A pair of jump leads directly to the battery and the starter might tell whats going on.....

  9. I had something similar to this in the past, and it proved to be the starter solenoid not engaging. However a faulty kill switch will also exhibit a similar set of symptoms

  10. yes guys thanks, I think I`ll have to start again at the beginning and work through it all, you know its something simple and thats whats frustrating. When I sort it I`ll post what it was, it may help someone else one day.

  11. I would start from running a jump lead cable from + of battery to positive pin in starter motor. If it turns over starter motor is all good. If it does not there lies your problem. As you are feeding power directly to it selonoid, broken wires or kill switch will not affect it.

If you are certain engine is ok then you could bump it? m600 will be easy. Find a hill, start rolling down so speed shows about 15-20 mph or more. Select gear that would match speed, ignition on and dump clutch.
I got quite a hang of it now and managed to start 999 from 20 mph, high compression m900, hyper it is easy.

If your testing shows relay ok, selenoid ok and so on then I would not think it is kill switch or wires related to it as there would be no power going to selenoid in 1st place.

At petrol station you said it started and stalled, then again and then nothing if it was starting system it would not turn over even.

  12. Run the jump lead earth as well..........Luca knows as well as I do, the earth leads can be cr*p.........

  13. I have 3 on m900 ;)

  14. I got the feeling that most of it was cr*p, (electrics in general) thats the fun bit. you never know whats next!
You meet the nicest people with a Ducati, mainly from the RAC.
A useful suggestion if you have no jump leads is jab a screwdriver between the large terminals on the start solenoid, To see if that engages the starter, also look at the main power relay under the seat. mine vibrated to bits so was very off and on as it felt like it as the broken bit jiggled round inside the housing, if i remember right its the yellow relay. this could be shorted out with a short length of wire across the large wire terminals.
