Monster Sp Lithium Battery - Does It Have An Integrated Bms?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by spenny_b, Oct 9, 2024.

  1. Afternoon folks,

Per the title, does anyone know if the Lithium battery fitted by Ducati to the Monster SP, which i believe is a Skyrich unit, has an integrated BMS?

Looking to buy another CTEK charger for maintenance, their Lithium XS, but not sure if that has the “Smarts” that a BMS does, for example disabling charge if the ambient hits 0°C as well as having the correct Bulk/Absorbtion/Float charge profiles

Spoken to the uk distributor who can’t tell me yes or no without having a model number for the battery, which i don’t have yet as i haven’t got the bike

(Noco charger specs state that their chargers must only be used if the battery does have a BMS; CTEK have come back with an iffy/indeterminate answer)

    Many thanks
    Spencer

  2. The owners manual states the OE battery is an SKYHT7B-FPZ. The Skyrich website says it has a BMS. Andy

  3. Ah good man, thanks Andy, perfect

  4. Yeah any half decent LiPo now has a BMS, good that someone was able to identify the part number and check

  5. Be interested to know which brand and model of charger you go for… need to buy one too..

  6. I'm currently have 3 bikes with LiFePo batteries and 2 on Lead AGM. My charger of choice is this, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08F37P...d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWwp13NParams. I've used NOCO chargers for a number of years and have been very happy with their performance, not unblemished, had a 2 die on me but still happy with them. Andy

  7. Until now I’ve been all-in on CTEK, the MXS5.0 for each of the cars and a couple of the bikes, and some 0.8’s for the other bikes. They’ve been absolutely faultless. The only niggle I’ve had is with a faulty extension wire (low voltage side) which despite looking absolutely fine, no obvious signs of damage, kept throwing charging errors.

The only reason I’m considering a Noco is to avoid a SNAFU with connecting a wrong (non Lithium) CTEK to the Monster SP…different connector etc. Of course I could just put a reminding sticker/cable tie/dob of paint-pen on the charging tail of a CTEK connection to the battery….in fact I think I probably will and take advantage of Amazon Day for an XS model

  8. Yeah my other project is upgrading the (perfectly good, no reason to upgrade) electrics in my campervan, been doing a shed load of research and planning for the last 6mths. LiFePO4 leisure batteries are really very good these days, all got integrated BMS’s, although it seems that many are common units used by different battery vendors, using v similar apps to control them, likely the same code “guts” with different UI’s. My recent Roamer purchase is a cracking bit of kit, made better by the significant drop in price of lithium cells recently. The primary objective of leisure batteries isnt a weight saving it’s mostly energy density for a given form factor, usable (90-95%) capacity and rapid recharging ability. But with lithium batteries for motorbikes, obviously its about the weight saving, so I really wasn’t sure if they had the BMS’s or not…good to hear they have though, albeit presumably without any Bluetooth connectivity or control over them

  9. With the NoCo don’t you have to manually select the charge type? I know I do with my NoCo5 ie select whether it’s connected to a LA, AGM, Lithium or even a 6v battery.

If you’re worried about connecting the wrong type of charger you could use an Optimate Duo 1 it will charge LA, AGM or Lithium without you having to manually select the correct charge for the battery type. Max charging ampage is 1a.
