1200 More Rear Brake Troubles....

  1. Ok sorry to drag this up again but I am also having issues with the rear brake.

The rear brake will not hold the bike on a hill, there is a ridiculous amount of travel on the pedal and the fluid now looks black.

I contacted my dealer with regards to a warranty claim and/or to see if my 2012 bike had already had the upgraded parts.

He asked me to check if I had 2mm or 3mm brake hosing, after checking under the seat to the ABS unit I established I had 2mm hosing which is the upgraded version apparently, which must have been fitted at the factory..

There is no way the bike would pass an MOT with this issue, on an expensive modern motorcycle this is just not acceptable, there is a clear issue that Ducati moved to address but it clearly has not worked, pointless having an expensive ABS system if it does not operate.

The bike is booked in at the dealers where I believe they are going to change the fluid for some racing fluid and bleed but how long will the improvement last, judging by other posts not long!

I'm going to write to VOSA to get this logged.

  2. I changed the pads on mine for MOT a noticeable difference and will easily hold bike & pillion for a hill start now, think they are fast road pads they fitted

  3. I had sintered pads fitted on my 2010 and it is better but still rubbish - will hold on a hill though - just!

I hang 4kg of barbell weights on the pedal when in the garage, which firms the pedal up for about a 1/2 day.

TBH, the rear drum brake on my '76 Suzuki Kettle is far better, which is unbelievable really?

  4. It'll be interesting to see what VOSA's response is (if they reply) as I've never had cause to contact them. Just before I left for distant lands I had the upgrade done but didn't get the chance to put many miles up so I'm not qualified to say whether it's any better or not to be honest.

Someone must have had their bike MOT'd by now? What was the result?

  5. new fluid will help for a while, but isn't a lasting cure. I used RBF600 fluid which lasted the longest, but the rear brake would still become inefective after a long day in hot temps and lots of use.

The only way to get a sensible back brake that keeps its minimal travel and works ok is to remove the cat (gets rid of the major heat source that seems to do the most to pedal travel), and potentially fit HH pads.

I contacted brembo regarding pads and their view was that the standard rear pads are as good as any.
They did however suggest a change of disc, so I have fitted a Brembo Serie Oro (Gold series). This is noticably better, to the point where I can use just the back brake for normal riding and slowing for junctions.

I have also fitted the heat shield now, but its early days so can't really comment if its helped any, given that the pedal stays firm anyway now without the cat.

    Hope that helps.

  6. I fitted the heat shield, fitted a bleed nipple to the ABS unit, had the back of the bike up in the air with the front on the ground overnight then bled the ABS unit then removed the rear calliper and suspended that up high overnight then bled that. I had air out of all points. I now have a great rear brake which has been great for the last 300+ miles with no noticeable drop off in performance. (No cat either)

  7. I did all of that too TT, but the only lasting improvement for keeping the pedal for significantly longer was removing the cat, and change of disc to get better performance.

Prior to cat removal I could get a long pedal easily within a days riding when used a fair bit whilst two up and pushing on. Three days into a trip and the brake would be useless. I will find out for sure over the May bank holiday if this is fully cured now. Fingers crossed ! :)

  8. Lads, look up my earlier posts. I won't chime in as I'll get shouted down. The fix is doable. Ain't cheap but worth every penny.

  9. EBC HH pads, EBC race fluid, ABS bleed nipples, caliper removed and bled again (umpteenth time!).....I have a rear brake that works but is not great (not anything like any previous bike I have owned). It's acceptable now but what really bugs me is the solution has been totally at my expense not to mention time!
I've had the bike 4 years and Ducati/my Dealer were unable to come up with a solution........not impressed.

Good on ya :niceone: .....keep us posted.

  10. Thats not good to hear as I had been told (by a dealer and others) that the problem was caused primarily by heat soak from the very hot and close CAT. But some of you guys have de-CATed have you not? And fitted a heat shield to further keep the master cylinder cool.

So the problem still exists after these mods?

My excuse (to myself and Mrs) and justification for spending on an alternative exhaust system was in part to protect the rear braking system (safety issue dear). Now blown out of the water.

  11. Just been on the VOSA website and interestingly they list a recall on the rear brake.....

    Recall Details
Concern :LOSS OF REAR BRAKING EFFICIENCY
Description :There is a potential for the friction material on the rear brake pads to come away from the brake pad, due to a fault in the adhesion. There is a possibility if ignored the brake pads will deteriorate leading to a loss of rear brake efficiency.
Remedial Action :Affected brake pads will be replaced.

  12. That's a different issue -pad material coming unbonded on some new bikes at the time
look at the total of affected bikes 51

  13. My Aprilia Tuono had the same issues for years, many people tried many solutions, most of which didn't work, fitting rear sets and relocating the master cylinder into an upright position was the best solution. I found a combination of heavy weight overnight, lifting the brake calliper up as high as possible, bleeding it and then rotating it and bleeding it again would solve the issue for about 6 months.

  14. I took my Multi 1200abs in for it's first MOT today, 11plate that I bought 10 months ago from a Ducati dealer. Rear brake has always been awful but given the reports I lived with it. Took the bike to a local mot guy (not the Ducati dealer) and he failed the bike on the rear brake being too spongy. He bled the brake with new fluid and the brake now actually works for the first time in my ownership and I got the mot too for a total of £53.00. I guess it'll fade in time again but till then I've got a MOT and a working rear brake! pretty crap really for a 3 year old bike eh :-/

  15. Send Ducati a bill for the expense above the cost of the MOT lol

  16. Someone must have had their bike MOT'd by now? What was the result?

mine passed the mot, my bike still as the cat (spent my exhaust money on an engine) the brake holds me on hills but that's the only time I use the rear brake oh and once while panic braking lol but that's another story.

  17. surprised by this thread have 2 ex ducati calipers on the rear of another bike, should have only used 1 because it locks the back wheel up easily and back wheel chirps every time I touch the rear wheel

brakes on my 900ss and monster also excellent

have I lost the plot or have ducati brakes gone backwards in the last 10 years

  18. Mine flew through the MOT :upyeah:

  19. I suspect a lot of owners will get an mot at the same time as the service, so the brake will be bled to get it working sufficiently to pass.
The rear brake on the mts was way worse than my previous ducats.
A new rear disc and no cat make it miles better.

I test rode a panigale and a new mts yesterday (mine was in for a service) and the panigale rear brake was better than the new mts by a mile. From memory the diaval had a better rear brake too, but that has a Larger rear disc and different caliper.
