Mot Legalities

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by LittleMonster, Mar 7, 2016.

  1. I've got the first MOT for my M796 at the end of April, and I've fitted an integrated tail light to the bike and removed the rear indicators.

Can anyone tell me if this is legal / will pass an MOT before I take a grinder to my indicator brackets? :)

It's one of the Motodynamic jobbies with the sequential LED indicators and 3 flash warning on braking. Those bits can be turned off if they are affecting how legal the unit is.

  2. The indicators are required to be a minimum distance apart. You can google that measurement. I suggest your first point of call is to discuss it with your MoT station. Andy
    I stand corrected.

  3. Perfect, thanks :)

The precise position and angle of visibility of direction
indicators are not part of this inspection, but they must be
on each side of the longitudinal axis of a solo machine.

So that says to me that as long as the left indicator is on the left side, and the right indicator is on the right side that I'm good to go! No minimum distance or angle restrictions etc.

  4. Nope - itll fail....I have to change the integrated light back to indicators on my rsv4 every year (only takes 2 minutes though)

I spent 120 odd quid on the one for my rsv4 to take it to MOT to then find out it failed as they changed the law the week before mine went in for mot...doh...

  5. depends who you take it to ;)

@LittleMonster if youre near essex give me a shout i know someone who will pass that for you if you have any issues

  6. I queried this recently with my friend/mot tester and he said as long as the indicator has no red light behind it at the time of its flashing it will pass an moT. I was asking researching the Brakers indicators.

  7. I don't know anyone [an mot tester] that will risk their job....not that lucky I'm afraid...

  8. I took my 675 to this chap without any indicators at all. He just told me to bring the whole tail tidy with the indy’s still attached that id removed.

He held them up to the bike and passed it there and then.

  9. I believe no indicators is different - you don't need indicators on a bike to pass (my ktm 525 supermoto passed with no indicators) - however if theres a switch then the indicators have to be on there....this is a little bit academic as at the end of the day its down to the tester himself. Ie whenever I took my hyper to Riders in Bristol they always insisted that I take the stock tail cans with me in case there was a spot check (termis fitted).

  10. I had front indy’s on there which were obviously going ten to the dozen, a switch for the indy's but no rear ones.

It really does depend how much of a jobsworth your mot tester is imo (as you alluded to).

  11. I feel it is unfair to class a tester as a jobsworth for doing his job properly. It's his job and reputation at risk if caught out. Which it does happen sometimes.

  12. most of the MOT is opinion. vosa want you to pass and advise where possible. some things. lights, tyres brake performance ar matters of fact. but what is excessive play, roughness or corrosion?

  13. Very true...case in point: I took the 525 supermoto for MOT end of last year...as its got a completely custom wiring loom I had the option within the menu's to make the rear light flash when braking (inspiration taken from BMW building it into their GS's I think at the time) when the MOT was being done the MOT tester said to me "i don't like the brake light flashing - that's a fail" to which I mentioned the BMW's now having it as a stock item - his eyebrow went up and he said "ill check but if that's the case then that's fine" it was just an option in the menu to switch it back which I did - while it was there...
