MST 1000 DS questions

  1. Hi

    First post :)

Just taken a 2004 MST 1000 DS out on a test that I'm thinking of buying and had some questions.

The back brake is almost non-existent - pressing it down when stationary holds the bike but when moving it does little to slow the bike down, compared to my existing bike (alp 2010) - it's the standard Brembos.

When parking the bike (turning the ignition to locked) the main lights stay on. I had to put the ignition key back in, turn to on, and off again to turn the lights off.

When the bike was warmed up it stalled 4 or so times when pulling up to traffic lights in first gear - could be I'm not use to the clutch?

All that sound normal for an 8 year old MST with 20k on the clock?

Aside from that rode really well and that sound from the twin pipes! :D

    Thanks for your help.

  2. George,

I had an 04 1000DS and it was a great fun bike with terrific character and a great sound with the cat removed and Termis fitted. With 20K on the clock make sure the valves have been reshimmed (expensive) and the belts replaced recently together with a complete service record. Also watch out for condition of clutch and chain/sprocket (should be on it's 2nd). The engine paint will be peeling by now but it's only cosmetic. I would try it again to make sure the stalling isn't a problem.

An added bonus is that you should be able to buy loads of extras at good prices as many have changed for the 1200.

  3. Firstly the back brake is crap, that's just the way it is. Not sure about the headlamp, my '03 bike doesn't do that, but it does have a switch on the right bar. Does it have a non-standard exhaust? They tend to affect the low speed running, especially non-standard headers, otherwise the throttle position sensor will need resetting to help the tickover, but they are somewhat prone to this. I have to say the pros outweigh the cons; the Multi is a lot more enjoyable than I expected, it's without peer on back roads. But there does seem to be a longer period of acclimatisation required with these. Once you get used to it, though, they're great bikes.

  4. Thanks. Very helpful.

  5. If you turn the key too far the "parking light" stays on ...side light and tail light.....is that what you meant?
    Yep back brake is poor.
not sure about the stalling.....could be the throttle position sensor needs resetting.....does it tick over in neutral on the stand?

  6. The early (2003/4) bikes had very soft valve guides, which tended to wear. Is there any burnt oil smoke on startup or if you blip the throttle after ticking over?
Otherwise could be valve clearances, could just need a service!
