MTS 1100s Oil Temperature

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Desmo Pete, Apr 2, 2012.

  1. What is the 'optimum' running temperature for my Multistrada 1100s.

I changed the oil and filter today and ran the engine up to 150c just to check for leaks.

During normal riding around in Cornwall, the temp hovers around 70c - 80c

I have read on other forums that some MTS riders close up a couple of the vents in front of the oil cooler in order that the oil runs hotter.

    Any advice please.

  2. My SS sits happily fully warmed at 105-110c?

Have indeed taped up the front of my oil cooler in these cool climes at the mo, means a quicker warmup/engine gets up to temp for shortish trips? Long trips means the tape gets removed after warmup.

Using proper foil heat-resistant ductape, almost a crude thermostat...

  3. Thanks for that. I might get some dense foam to insert into the vent slots.

  4. thats the favourite Pete
during winter all 4 of mine blocked so it stays about 90C even in frosts......you don't get so much white emullsion(no not paint:wink:) in the oil then too

  5. Yes that's why I'm asking cos before I did my oil change yesterday the window was white.

I ran the bike up to 150c and it cleared.

Just need to find some dense foam I can shape to fit.

  6. Remove your oil filler plug when you get home, lets your crankcase breathe & you dont get so much condensation/emulsion in the cold/short trips? :upyeah:

** Put the plug in an aerosol lid on your fuel filler cap so you dont forget to refit it before you go out again!
