Saw the new GT at NEC and contacted Snells for price and fitment of the new DP crash bars. Wanted these for 2 reasons: 1.I've fropped the bike on tour, fully loaded so need some side panel protection 2. Just bought the new Drift Ghost action cam so want a bar to mount it on for our next big trip this year. I was told the DP ones would fit my Sept 2010 model so bought a pair. First thing I noticed was how heavy they were! Plus black paint seemed to be peeling off over one welded joint. I proceeded to fit the bars and then found out that the upper part of the crash bar bracket cannot be fixed to the bikes frame as the bike frame does not have the small female threaded plate welder onto it! So back to Snells for a refund! So after a bit of searching came across the Touratech s/steel bracket with uses a bracket fitted to the top rad bracket. Received it next day, 30 quid more exp than DP one but its lighter and looks good with shot blasted effect. Has anyone else got experience of this bracket? I will post pics and exp of fitting.
Is the TT just a bracket? I am looking for somewhere to mount a GoPro in the rad area so would be interested in your experience. There seems to be a female M8 thread in the frame that I wondered about screwing a RAM mount into as an alternative. Nick
Some tried mounting spot lights on the radiator brkts and there was the rumor that this could cause the brkts/radiator to fail, I don't know if this is true but it could be a potential problem.
M8 thread is what's missing from my bike - it was added by Ducati when they came up with the crash bar idea which could then be retro-fitted to bikes that had the M8 fitment. The TT bars look a lot better than the DP ones and I can't see how spotlights would fit in them. If cater axle is referring to the Motech spotlight brackets that fitted to the side mountings on the rad then, yes, I know these mountings will eventually crack the rad. I have used TT kit before on my GS and its pretty bulletproof and well designed & developed with thorough testing. I reckon their crash bars are half the weight of DP ones!
hmm...made me re-visit the Touratech website. Bike Build - Ducati Multistrada 'Adventure' Edition - Touratech-USA I do like the exhaust protection - the way it blends with the std guard (better than the perforrated versions) and finishes off the front of the bike. bugs
Re post I've just put on regarding flaking engine paint; the other reason it's now (MTS1200) staying in dealers shed is the fact that the rad is weeping due to fog light fitment done at another dealers where previous owner bough it new 18 months ago and had Motech lights added at point of sale. The fog lights were mounted onto the rad and I was told by my local dealer that this is the 2nd one they've come across with lights fitted directly to the rad, which then leaks, due to engine vibration causing stress fractures in the metal! I'm now waiting to see what happens. I have rung both Ducati dealers today and both have been very helpful so am sure something can be done. As it is NOT covered by the bikes 24 month warranty. Now looking at crash bars to mount fogs etc off.
I've also heard of SW Motech Hawk light bracket for radiator mounting being withdrawn because of fractured rad. As for bars, I don't really like the look of any of them so have gone for R&G bungs on frame, spindles and bar ends. They look way better IMHO. whether or not they work, I hope never to find out!
Just to add my 2p worth. I bought genuine Ducati crash bars. I'm pretty mechanically minded but couldn't fit them. My bike is missing the triangular bracket on the frame. I rang Riders Cardiff who couldn't believe I didn't have said bracket. So I returned the bars and had a look at the 3 MTS they had, brand new, in their showroom. Of the 3, only 1 of them had the bracket!! Mine was a 2011 bike, these were brand new, unregistered 2012 bikes! The parts guy could not believe what he was seeing so was going to e-mail Ducati about this. I must find out what their reply was one of these days... I ended up fitting SW Motech bars.
Good old Ducati - still not up to the standard of Bee eM and the accessory options for the GS et al! One day all Multis will have the correct bracket fitted to attach their crash bars to! As an update, I started fitting the Touratech brackets but have had to stop as one of the brackets that attaches to the bike's top rad mount is incorrect one! So back to Touratech in Wales for a new one to be ordered from Germany. At least the current weather prevents bike use anyway!
good old touratech this time then :biggrin: I think its pretty clear that the crash bars were not available when the bike initially came out, and have been designed / made available for the 2013 model. Its not that surprising imo to find the updated frame being phased in during the 2012 model year. I would have thought though that Ducati should be able to confirm whether they will fit your bike based on frame number prior to ordering. Does anyone have a picture of this mounting bracket on the later frames so those with 2012 and earlier bikes can understand what they need to look for
No pic but it is a triangular gusset with a threaded hole towards the headstock under the side fairings.
Is this the one? I didn't know what they were for but noticed them when the threads started to rust up - hence the greased up bolt! My bike's a 2012. Mark H
Your right re the Hawk lights. Ordered some Motech crash bars and some Hawk light clips to now mount them on said bars. Clips are on Bikebitz not the Motohaus website! Ordered both no problem. Later that day got a phone call re clips and an e-mail re bars! Both out of stock so have to wait 2-3 weeks for Hans to start up his cnc machine and get making. Didn't say out of stock on their websites. Still, snow all over the place so not going anywhere on the Mutley :frown:
