Hi Guys, Just a question about the coolant temperature. My 2010 Multi touring showed a flashing "HI " on the display and a high temp warning on the round display after about 25 mins in heavy traffic. Outside air temp was only 16 C. Fortunately the traffic cleared and I could get a move on and the temp dropped rapidly. I have done about 3000 miles on the bike, (my first water cooled!) since buying it in Feb with no probs. The fans work as they should and the coolant mod has been done. The bike is fitted with an R&G radiator guard. Temp is usually between 70 & 85 when on the move but goes up to about 100 in town when air temp is about 15 - 20. Is this normal? Anything else I should check? Thanks for any advice. Cheers
It probably needs a burp, I`ve been in city centre in 30 deg stop start and never seen "HI" just lots of fan action.
The temperatures your's is showing are about normal but it shouldn't go to HI. Mine will go up o 108 - 110 but the fans come on and stop it getting any higher. As suggested above it may have an airlock.
mmdog, some of the early bikes had rad issues. These were replaced under warranty where necessary, when a problem was reported. mine didn't suffer from it, but know a few on here had the problem. It might be worth a visit to the dealers to see if yours has one of these early faulty radiators. Not sure what they would do about it now though assuming your out of warranty.
On my 2010 Multistrada the temperature would rapidly climb if I got caught at too many traffic lights going through the city. The fan would come on at 104 C but the engine temperature would still slowly climb. Within a week or so of owning the bike I had put an Altrider radiator guard on the bike. I believe this restricted the airflow required by the fan to cool the engine and caused the problem, particularly on hot days (30+). I ran a test by running the bike in the garage until the fan came on and again the temperature continued to climb with the fan running. I traded the bike before I could remove the guard and rerun the test, but I now have a 2013 model without a radiator guard and have no issues at all with the bike overheating. I must say a great relief as I used to worry about temperature on the first bike every time I took it out. Could I also say I have had absolutely NO issues with the 2013 model and celebrated this weekend by buying a very expensive Ducati jacket as I intend to stay with the brand for a long time. I never get off the bike without a smile on the dial.
I have a 2013 with an R&G rad guard. No problems in very heavy Paris traffic last summer despite 30 degree heat. And yes, Blacky, I'm with you. More smiles per mile on the MTS than any bike I've ever owned. I've racked up nearly 10,000 miles in six months though because of this so will trade it for an - I hope upgraded - MTS when Ducati releases it.
Early ones had rad issues. I have a 2010 model and it was getting hotter and hotter. In Europe last summer it couldn't cope with going into towns - it just rushed up to Hi and I had to stop. This year it was doing it in the UK! Took it to the dealer - out of warranty - Ducati agreed to replace the rad if I paid for a small service (oil service - which I wanted before 3500 miles around Europe again). Before, 'Normal' running temp was 100 degrees C plus! Now it is 70! Handled 35 degrees C ambient in Croatia and Italy no worries. Fans kick in at about 105 and all under control. New rad required I'd say.
Thanks a lot for the replies, very interesting. I am still a bit puzzled why it has suddenly become a problem. I did 2000 miles around france in July and did not have a problem then. Have talked to the dealer (Italia Moto Lincoln) who I trust and they do not know of any others they have sold having any snags. So will have to watch it & see. Any more gen would be much appreciated! Cheers
I had one of the early 2010 models when the bike first came out, and was one of the first to post on here about the rad and overheating on mine. Happened at the 600 mile service stage... result was a blockage in the rad, resulting in a replacement under warranty. Since then, 15000 miles (with a R&G rad guard on) and no issues, tho like all dukes, it don't like sitting in traffic queues, but never hits the 'High' display which it did when I had the problem. From my experience, I'd check it out with yr dealer as others have suggested. Nick
Hi NRG-Mutley Thanks for your info, found that the bottom of the rad was cold. Local dealer Italia Moto says coolant recall can cause sludge to collect in the rad. New rad required and will be replaced under warranty, even though warranty has run out - top blokes! So have had a new suspension ecu and now rad, hope thats all! Cheers
