V4 Multi V4 Whining Noise On Deceleration

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by MultiMonster1200, Jun 13, 2023.

  1. Hi all,
My Multi has done about 1800 miles and the gearshifts were quite clunky, among a few other niggles. Took it to the dealer who said the chain was slightly slack, tightened this to spec and sent me on my way.

On the motorway ride home I noticed a quite alarming whine whilst decelerating. It seems loudest in 6th gear when decelerating from 72mph to around 61mph before slowly disappearing at below 60mph.

Anyone else have this issue? Any pointers?

    Thanks

  2. If it’s just occurred after the dealership chain adjustment, check it for yourself as per owner’s manual.

  3. If the dealers there are anything like the dealers in the US, then the whining noise is probably coming from your wallet.:) Seriously though, recheck the chain. Dealers are sometimes less than expert.

  4. very strange. loads of warranty so back to the dealer and tell them to sort it :upyeah:

  5. Checked with the tool provided in the toolkit and appears to be in spec.

  6. This is probably what I'll end up doing but the dealer is stacked out until late July so I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if there was a quick fix.

  7. Hear you. My dealer has bloody 3 month lead time now. Crazy :(

  8. Was the wife on the back?

  9. Check the wheels are in alignment.

  10. Right, just for closure in case anyone else has this issue.

When I got the bike the chain was a bit of a mess so I degreased, cleaned and lubricated it. I did around 200 miles without issue before getting the chain adjusted at the dealer, right after which the noise appeared.
I had a hunch that perhaps I hadn't quite lubricated the chain well enough in the first place and that adjusting the chain had made this more prominent. Another possible issue was the degreaser I used prior to washing and lubing the chain in that maybe the degreaser hadn't all been washed away, negating the effects of the lubricant I applied afterwards.

I lubed the chain up thoroughly after a short ride and let it penetrate for a day or so. I've just been out for a 50 mile ride and the noise has almost completely disappeared.

For info I use XCP Professional Chain lube, this is aerosol type so good for getting into the nooks and crannies, but perhaps needs a more through application than a wax based chain. On the plus side it definitely seems to attract less grime than a thicker wax based lube.

    Hope this helps someone.
