1000 Multistrada 1000ds - 2003 - Oil Sump Plug

  1. Hi just acquired my MTS - love the bike. Looking to do an engine oil/filter change but can someone tell me what size socket I need. The plug is countersunk with a hex head. I've tried a 10mm allen socket but it seems too loose but the 11m socket won't even fit in the plug. Any info would be great thanks!

  2. I think you'll find it is 10mm sadly. The number of times i've doubted the size in exactly the same way. Best you can do is try all your 10mm allen bits* in the hope that one is slightly snugger. Also carefully examine the plug to see if someone has slipped on it previously and also that your "bit" goes as far in as it can and then while checking you are completely "perpendicular" keep your fingers crossed and twist. You could try using a "T" bar for the best way to apply torque but not much in it really if you are careful. Depending on your success, you might want to get a new plug. :upyeah:

    * if you are really worried about a slip then you could grind an 11mm bit for a better fit if you don't mind sacrificing one 9and have a bench grinder etc).

  3. Cheers Chris - at least I'm not asking the daft question. You would think Ducati would use conventional sizings.... let's see how it goes. I know the last oil change was 12 mths back so hopefully the plug hasn't siezed up over time.

  4. you can still resort to hammer and chisel if necessary :) have had to do this many times over the years, possibly you too?

  5. it is a conventional 10mm but for some reason even from new a 10mm hex male key has more clearance than usual in your average sump plug. It's the shallow-ness of the engagement that compounds the problem over the years with use.
