1260 Multistrada 1260s Handlebar Control Cabling

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Wicksy, Apr 23, 2023.

  1. Hi all,

Looking for some help please. I bought a 2020 1260s with 4000 miles on it. Got it home and cleaning it, I noticed that the cables that run into the handlebar controls on both sides have the inner wires exposed, with what looks like a bit of tape just wrapped around them.

Is anyone else like this, or should I return to the dealer and log it as a problem.

    Cheers

    Neil

  2. The insulation on those wires is exposed, rather than the wire itself. It is not a problem, just a case of the original extra protection, the wrapping tape, coming unstuck. If you have some black Gaffer/Duck tape, just use that to cover the gap.

  3. I understand that its not the actual conductor that is exposed, but I'm a security engineer and I work with low voltage multicore cable all the time and id never leave the individual cables exposed like this. It also concerns me that where the cables enter the switch housing that water could ingress easily.

Just wondering if everyone else's is like this?

  4. Looking at the cable again, could it be that there has been a repair? The frayed ends evident indicate that. I'd suggest that the original cable outer has been cut back for whatever reason and a poor attempt made to re-wrap it.
I would think the right thing to do is remove the wrapping and inspect the switch housing to check. As you are in the business I'm sure you know of various products/gels that can waterproof switchgear, and re-wrap the wires to a decent standard.

  5. This was my thought, has it been repaired for some reason? and If it has, as I bought it from a Ducati dealer and its got 2 years (ish) of factory warranty remaining, I think I need to return it and get it repaired to the same spec as a it left the factory

  6. Fair enough.

  7. The tape should, was, wrapped around the braiding. Tbh, it’s most likely the adhesive on the tape has been compromised by a cleaning product or simply washing the bike. I’ve seen a couple and simply wrap it back up with a bit of loom tape.

  8. Just wrap some self amalgamating tape round it and forget about it, it's just come unstuck.

  9. My 1260 looked like that and I thought the same. Just wrapped a bit of electrical tape around.

  10. Perfect thanks guys, just wanted to see if everyone else’s was like this
I’ll get the self amalgamating tape and do it myself
